Rebekah Alfred 5/07/2023 1:36 PMYesterday, I chose to walk to and back from the Century City mall, which is around 5.4 miles total. I decided to go early in the morning, so there was not much traffic on the road or the sidewalk. Even though I had driven through a similar route to get to the mall before, I found that there were several small "sights" that I had overlooked. The route I took to the mall went through a residential area and I was able to admire the beautiful houses as I walked. I was also able to take the time to be more mindful and take in the views around me, listening to the birds chirp and look at the blooming flowers. Despite it being a long distance to go on foot, I genuinely enjoyed the walk so much!-
Joshua Rhee 5/08/2023 3:41 PMThanks for sharing Rebekah, this is very inspiring. The distance between major hotspots like malls and residential areas can make pedestrian travel very intimidating at times, especially when there is a requirement to cross vast strips of road. I realized from what you said about the small sights that the value of embellishing roadways has become more obsolete the more infrastructure is more car-dependent. It almost makes you think what the point of those small sights are when travelling by foot has been made to be so inconvenient and even dangerous due to cars. -
ANOUSKA SARAF 5/07/2023 4:27 PMHey Rebekah, that's a long walk and I'm glad you did it! I usually take the bus to century city, and although it is public transport it still contributes to carbon emissions. Your post made me think of including the walk as a part of "hanging out" with friends when we're going to grab food or watch a movie, which makes it feel like less daunting and more like a fun activity we can do together!

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Conduct Virtual MeetingsHow can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?
Rebekah Alfred 5/07/2023 1:24 PMThe company I work at falls within the fields of healthcare and biotechnology, which is relevant to this challenge since reducing carbon emissions ultimately protects our health. Through conducting a meeting through Zoom, it honored our company's culture of doing our best to help patients at skilled nursing facilities.-
Roy Song 5/07/2023 6:02 PMHello Rebekah, it sounds amazing to see how the zoom meeting at your company fulfills such novel goal to help patients as well as helping the environment through reducing carbon emissions. The overarching theme of my research project 1 revolved around the idea of greenhouse gas emission and its contribution to climate crisis, so I feel that it is great to see how virtual meetings at your company contributes to alleviating this issue. I think that zoom meetings are also great in a way that it is convenient for us and make it easier for us to be mindful of saving the environment, especially as it eliminates the need for us to use transportations, which are some of the main contributors of carbon emissions.
