Explore My Area

Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 130 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

Spending more time outside has increased my appreciation for my surroundings. Any time I spend time just observing nature, I find myself appreciating the beauty of my surroundings and have a stronger desire to spend more of my time outside. It makes me appreciate the planet so much more and makes me want to make other lifestyle changes to live a more sustainable life. While it sometimes takes more effort to live sustainably, it is so important.

I went on a hike at house mountain to explore the nature around me! Normally I would probably have a little music playing in an airpod or talk to someone on the phone while I hike, but this time I fully disconnected and appreciated the nature around me. I saw tons of squirrels, birds, and bugs. I also saw these really big, crazy birds that I think were vultures flying above me, which was kinda unsettling. I really enjoyed my hike and feel like I appreciate and notice the beauty of the nature around me much more.

Have really enjoyed cooking more when I follow it by mindfully eating!

Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

At first, I would just eat my meals really fast and get on with whatever I was doing or look at my phone again. However, as this challenge has gone on, I have found myself slowing down in all aspects of my life. While meals used to be super rushed for me, and I would often eat during class or while doing homework or even just scrolling on Instagram, I now take the time to slow down and just enjoy the food I am eating. I have seen how the amount of time I spend eating has increased over the past 21 days

Found it much easier by the end of the 21 days to sit down and eat mindfully, whereas at the beginning I would just scarf down my meals and move on rather than enjoying or thinking about what I was eating.

When practicing mindful eating, meals have become a time where I can just stop and think. I don't feel bad for not doing school work, watching a lecture, or doing something else productive while eating.

Mindful eating has been going pretty well! Sometimes it is difficult to not accidentally pick up my phone while I am eating, but this has gotten easier and easier the longer I practice mindful eating.
