REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Haley Bartlett 4/26/2023 12:53 PMFruits that naturally carry seeds motivated me to put it back where it should be, in the ground. If you bury a half-eaten apple, it has the optional to be used to spawn new life. My neighbors have water bins they use for watering their gardens and a composting bin outside that's used as makeshift fertilizer to create a circular plan of food growth on private land. I want to be like that, and the first step is starting a green waste bin at my property. While I don't own the land, I can send my food waste places where it can be used. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate the carbon footprint of my householdAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Haley Bartlett 4/05/2023 10:46 AMI calculated of 36.67 tons of carbon my home generates a year. This is 73340 pounds of carbon generated by me and my mother just living. There is some saving grace as my mother drives a hybrid and we don't eat much meat, but I see that if I move closer to campus, I won't have to use my car as often to commute daily to school. I can also become a pescatarian or one that just limits what kind of meats I intake. I can live without beef and pork, I hardly eat them, but i still do on occasion. I can't live without meat, but I can eat fish and poultry meat, which are not only good for me, but decrease my carbon footprint. I can also collect rain water and try to get enough money to own a house so I can install solar panels. The only thing keeping my mother form doing that to our current home, is because we don't own it. We rent. And if we can't get our landlord to fix half of the appliances inside the house, we won't be able to convince him to install solar panels. I think my best bet is to move, which is what I'm going to do soon. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Haley Bartlett 4/05/2023 10:28 AMFood portions being decreased helps overall health, as far as my experience has gone so far. I feel lighter and I realize I don't need as much food as society has had be believe. The photo below shows what a "normal" plate looks like in my household compared to the plate I'm using for lunch.
