What was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?

I was able to avoid air travel on a recent trip to see my grandparents in North Carolina. I feel that driving instead of flying was the smartest method to limit my exposure to covid. On top of that, the carbon emissions produced were undoubtedly less than a large passenger jet. I will continue this trend as other trips come up this summer.

Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

I feel eating without distractions has recently improved my overall well being. Its nice to be able to dedicate time away from looking at a computer,tv or cell phone screen especially for me. Long exposure to the computer screen during the last year of remote learning has caused me to develop some photosensitivity issues. Dedicating time away from screens is helping me stay healthy and mentally refreshed. I recommend this challenge to anyone else who feels they have too much exposure to screens.

What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

I have noticed that from going outdoors more, my mind and body feel much more refreshed. In general I now have more energy and overall a more positive attitude. It's been very enjoyable to hike in the shawangunks and hudson highlands, and take in the beautiful winter scenery. In terms of infrastructure, my only thought is it would be beneficial to have more parking locations in the gunks. That way people can have access to different areas and there would be less overcrowding in general.

After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

The carbon footprint of my household (of two people) was calculated to be roughly 41,000 lbs of C02 per year. The majority of the emissions was directly linked to the vehicles I own. My vehicles emit 29,000 lbs of C02 annually. I estimated that I could cut that number in half if I owned two hybrid vehicles instead of gas. It's also worth noting that heating and cooling were the other big contributors to carbon emissions. It made me realize how important it is to manage the thermostat when it's not in use. Other options to reduce my carbon footprint are using cold water, using less lights or LED bulbs, and opting for power management on my desktop.
