Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?

    Evelyn Bick 12/10/2020 11:23 AM
I think that I will now try and focus on being conscious of the time that I leave lights and water on so that I can conserve energy as much as I can. Using more natural lighting in my house could also be something my family and I could improve on.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Evelyn Bick's avatar
    Evelyn Bick 12/10/2020 10:19 AM
My vision of a sustainable community would be one that does not depend on fossil fuels and non-renewable resources and takes care of the planet so that future generations can see a world similar to what was there before. We would need to change where we get our energy from, and try to switch to electric or hybrid vehicles. More than anything though, we would have to change people's mindsets.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Evelyn Bick's avatar
    Evelyn Bick 12/10/2020 8:04 AM
I have noticed smaller details about my neighborhood and the places I live near, and that right now, construction is happening all around me. I really enjoyed the fact that I can be in my own headspace and relax while I'm outside. Some infrastructure changes that could make my walks more enjoyable would be having fewer houses in a certain spot so that I would be able to walk through the woods a little bit.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Wave and Tidal Energy
What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?

    Evelyn Bick's avatar
    Evelyn Bick 12/10/2020 7:56 AM
I learned that wave and tidal energy use the force and kinetic energy that comes from the water to generate electricity. There are many different technologies that are being developed to create power in this way. These systems are much more expensive than other energy sources, but they are very reliable due to the constant flow of the ocean.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Evelyn Bick's avatar
    Evelyn Bick 12/08/2020 3:58 PM
I had never heard about silvopasture before today, and it was a very interesting thing to learn about. I think that the biggest advantage of silvopasture is the improved health and stability of both the livestock and the land they are on. There are more than just livestock products that can be cultivated from silvopasture, which is also a reason why this is a good option for farmers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Evelyn Bick's avatar
    Evelyn Bick 12/03/2020 1:23 PM
I learned that family planning is not just something that can help reduce unplanned pregnancies but educate men and women about their health and futures. The needs of different people can be affected by the place that they live in because of its culture, wealth, and overall acceptance of family planning services. People’s needs can differ because everyone is in a unique situation, so if you compared the need for these services in one country to another, you would see different areas of demand.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Evelyn Bick's avatar
    Evelyn Bick 12/01/2020 4:09 PM
In Asheville and my community, a barrier that some women might face would be losing work due to maternity leave, the gender pay gap, and less representation or opportunities in government or positions of political power. Women's sports are often funded less as well, and as covid continues, there has been an increase in domestic violence which unevenly affects women and children.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Evelyn Bick's avatar
    Evelyn Bick 12/01/2020 2:25 PM
You can make choices that protect peatlands by deciding to not use products whose production causes the loss of valuable peatlands, like palm oil. Advocating for areas that could experience peatland degradation in the future, like contacting government or private leaders, and supporting organizations focused on preserving this land can also help. Even if you live far away from a peatland, you can still help protect them by sharing your voice.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Evelyn Bick's avatar
    Evelyn Bick 11/29/2020 3:28 PM
I learned that refrigerants can not only harm the ozone layer (CFCs & HCFCs) but have drastic warming effects on the atmosphere (HFCs). Natural refrigerants are being introduced around the world as a replacement to the ones currently used through an amendment in the Montreal Protocol. Supermarkets contribute to this impact because they have vast amounts of refrigerants running through their building, creating lots of leakage and pollution from their space.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Evelyn Bick's avatar
    Evelyn Bick 11/29/2020 3:12 PM
The thing that concerns me the most globally about how we are affecting the planet is the lack of motivation in powerful political leaders. Some countries are taking climate change and our negative effects very seriously, while others, like the U.S., have done little to nothing to address the issues. Locally, when I see more and more construction and industrialization in places that use to be natural, that worries me when it comes to wildlife and habitats in those areas.
