REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Eli Border 12/11/2020 6:06 AMI had not heard of silvopasture before now. In my opinion, it’s biggest advantage is its ability to reduce Co2. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Eli Border 12/07/2020 6:50 AMI think more about any action I do and how it affects the environment. It is overwhelming to look ahead, because things don’t always look so good ahead. I feel hopeful in us and how our generation is going to control this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Eli Border 12/07/2020 6:39 AMSocietal expectations regarding gender roles, workplace culture, gender stereotypes, and more. These all can occur in our community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Eli Border 12/07/2020 6:20 AMOne of the ways that I can make choices about peatlands even though I am very far away is just to spread awareness so that more people know about how much they help and the damage that is done to destroy one. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Eli Border 12/07/2020 6:05 AMI learned, as a male, than family planning is a bigger issue than I thought it was, and it affects many people across the world. The need for family planning is very high, and it more rural or less developed areas family planning methods can be harder to have access to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Eli Border 12/04/2020 10:20 AMMy diet impacts deforestation because I eat a lot of palm oil and animal products. I can reduce the amount of intake I have from these, and that will increase my positive impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Eli Border 12/04/2020 9:53 AMI will be less worried about when it “expires”. I will not think that there is any need to throw out things that I do not need to from now on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Eli Border 12/04/2020 7:37 AMRicher countries eat more meat because meat is more expensive to produce and purchase. Eating meat affects our bodies by potentially adding fat or protein, however anything in moderation is okay. It affects our planet because it is not environmentally friendly to produce. It affects other people in the same ways it does our planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Eli Border 12/04/2020 7:32 AMOn top of the old BB&T Building which is now a hotel, the highest building in Asheville, would work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Calculate the carbon footprint of my householdAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Eli Border 12/04/2020 7:15 AMYes I did. The main ones were on a very large scale, like transportation such as flight, but I am willing to not eat as much meat to reduce my carbon footprint.
