    An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    If I saved $1500 a year on thrown out food, I would spend it on finishing paying off my student debt, or use the money towards sustainable home upgrades such as solar panels or developing my backyard food forest.

    It can also improve soil fertility and increase the growth of plants. By enriching the soil, it also reduces the need for fertilizers.
