  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Kasey Boyd's avatar
    Kasey Boyd 12/08/2020 8:23 AM
I had not. I think the biggest advantage is the fact that it is better for the environment, not causing as much deforestation and sequestering carbon.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Kasey Boyd's avatar
    Kasey Boyd 12/04/2020 7:53 AM
People in a sustainable community would all be vegan, use sustainable power such as solar power, and have LED light bulbs, low flow showerheads and sinks, and electric cars.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Kasey Boyd's avatar
    Kasey Boyd 12/03/2020 8:27 AM
I learned that unplanned pregnancies can result in depression. People in impoverished countries have less access to family planning than people in developed countries.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Kasey Boyd's avatar
    Kasey Boyd 12/02/2020 8:19 AM
I try to be more mindful of my consumeristic mindset.
How much we have to do immediately to keep the world a livable place for humans.
The fact that restoration is possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Kasey Boyd's avatar
    Kasey Boyd 12/01/2020 8:48 AM
We can reduce our use of paper and not eat foods with palm oil.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Kasey Boyd's avatar
    Kasey Boyd 11/30/2020 8:49 AM
I haven’t really experienced any disadvantages in my community due to me being female, however, I do come from a privileged position.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Kasey Boyd's avatar
    Kasey Boyd 11/24/2020 7:29 AM
My diet is really only contributing to deforestation through the chocolate I eat, since I don’t eat foods with palm oil, coffee, or animal products. However, I primarily eat Endangered Species chocolate, which is Rainforest Alliance Certified.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Kasey Boyd's avatar
    Kasey Boyd 11/23/2020 8:34 AM
I will view them as more of a guideline and check to make sure the food is spoiled before throwing it away, and be more vigorous in my attempts to eat the food before it goes bad.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Kasey Boyd's avatar
    Kasey Boyd 11/20/2020 6:58 AM
They could be placed on top of the building that used to be the BB&T. They could be placed on top of mountains.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Learn More about Biomass
Had you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!

    Kasey Boyd's avatar
    Kasey Boyd 11/19/2020 5:19 AM
I had heard of biomass technology before, but I never really knew what it was. I learned that it would put carbon into the atmosphere, but that the carbon would have already been in circulation.
