  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Emma Briand's avatar
    Emma Briand 4/29/2022 4:15 PM
I had never heard the term before spending time doing a little bit of research on it. I believe that one of the biggest advantages of it is that it minimizes deforestation, which is a horrible thing for the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Emma Briand's avatar
    Emma Briand 4/29/2022 4:09 PM
As I lean more about environmental challenges we face, I see the world around me more preciously and am more aware of its fragility. I am living my day-to-day life as mindfully as I can, trying to help the environment. I fear that too few people do the same, I can only hope my actions make a tiny difference in the world.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Electricity Choose LED Bulbs
Changing lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?

    Emma Briand's avatar
    Emma Briand 4/29/2022 4:04 PM
My next step is to get LED's for my room at my dad's house, this way I can be more energy efficient at both my parents houses.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Healing & Renewal Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

    Emma Briand's avatar
    Emma Briand 4/25/2022 4:17 PM
Spending time outdoor has made me come to know my area much better. As I walk the streets I discover new roads and new parks that I had never seen before. This is honestly great because I now have a mental picture of what the streets actually look like as a whole.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Emma Briand's avatar
    Emma Briand 4/22/2022 8:25 PM
Although my walks haven't been daily, I have been able to notice more and more signs that summer is approaching. I have quite enjoyed the increase in the temperature as it makes my walks last longer. The area in which I walk in has lots of construction so I am planning on alternating paths to find a more quiet and natural place.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Emma Briand's avatar
    Emma Briand 4/22/2022 8:19 PM
Eating more fruits and vegetables can reduce methane emission into the atmosphere because these types of foods are compostable. It also affects the human body positively as it can help regulate your digestive system. On another note, eating less meat helps contribute to the diminishment of a large amount of GHG's that live stock production produced.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Emma Briand's avatar
    Emma Briand 4/08/2022 8:29 PM
When practicing mindful eating, I am able to detect when I am satisfied with my food consumption much more easily because I am not distracted by a screen.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 2
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Emma Briand's avatar
    Emma Briand 4/08/2022 8:17 PM
The no coffee and no cocoa products was no problem at all. However, it has  been quite difficult to make sure to not eat products containing palm oil. Surprisingly, a very large amount of everyday foods such as granola bars and cereal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Emma Briand's avatar
    Emma Briand 4/01/2022 11:52 AM
Your choices would have to revolve around producing less ghg's because this is a big factor that will increase the global temperature and cause the peatlands to dry out. Reducing your live stock consumption may also help.

    • Jessica Burpee's avatar
      Jessica Burpee 4/07/2022 2:41 PM
We could also reduce our consumption of foods that have palm oil in them, and reduce paper use.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about Biochar
Can biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?

    Emma Briand's avatar
    Emma Briand 4/01/2022 11:30 AM
It may also reduce emissions of nitrous oxide.
