Mason's actions
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
Public Transit
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or implementing some other small improvement.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 20 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
I will avoid buying and using 3 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Industry
Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their household
Individual actions are important, but people and organizations working together can make a real impact. I will share a carbon calculator with a friend and invite them to calculate the carbon footprint of their household.
Transportation
Try Carpooling
Carpooling
I will commute by carpool 8 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Try CarpoolingList some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Mason Brown 11/08/2022 1:06 PMFor a class, I am going bird watching at Point Lobos and I carpool with a friend in the class carpool to the location in order to save money and gas. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Mason Brown 11/03/2022 2:14 PMPeople in richer countries eat more meat because it is expensive to raise animals to eat them. Meanwhile, vegetables or grains are much cheaper to eat and grow. Meat affects our bodies negatively and increases our risk of heart disease (among other medical issues). As for the planet, the meat industry creates large amounts of methane and is responsible for some of the planet's warming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Mason Brown 11/03/2022 2:11 PMI normally use plastic bags or plastic containers for things I've bought, like food that comes packaged in plastic containers for example. What I've been doing is cleaning the containers and reusing them, I also wash and reuse plastic ziplock bags that I have. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Mason Brown 11/03/2022 2:06 PMI think that eating mindfully makes the food taste better a little bit because I'm focusing on the food itself rather than whatever I'm usually watching or distracting myself with when I'm not eating mindfully -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Mason Brown 10/25/2022 4:16 PMI'd rather use this money to save for after college so I can more easily afford housing once I finish studying.
