  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Rayhan Brown 12/08/2020 10:21 AM
I hadn’t heard of silvopasture before now. I think that the main benefit of silvopasture is probably the fact that it is a much more humane way to raise livestock.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Rayhan Brown 12/04/2020 11:05 AM
I believe that in the near future we will utilize all different types of renewable energy depending on where you on. In the far future maybe fusion energy. We need to change the government and the government funding for this to happen.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Rayhan Brown's avatar
    Rayhan Brown 12/03/2020 11:04 AM
I learned that it is very necessary for family planning to be a thing. It’s very important for both political parties because it means abortion rates go down and teen pregnancies also go down.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Rayhan Brown's avatar
    Rayhan Brown 12/02/2020 10:52 AM
I know that I use a lot of paper everyday for my own uses and for school. This causes deforestation which is very bad for the forests. The fact that it seems that even if I tried to do something it probably wouldn’t have an impact. The part that makes me feel hopeful is we are getting a new president who will probably be able to improve the situation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Rayhan Brown's avatar
    Rayhan Brown 12/01/2020 9:02 AM
I can do this by buying replacements of palm oil so that there isn’t a demand for the peatlands land.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Rayhan Brown's avatar
    Rayhan Brown 11/30/2020 10:07 AM
Some of the barriers include that women are less likely to be interviewed or get jobs in STEM fields than men are.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

I eat a ton of chocolate each year. I love chocolate a lot and eat some almost every day. I also eat a lot of eggs and dairy products, I eat 2 eggs almost every day and have milk in things like cheese and yogurt almost every day. I can try to have chocolate free months and every try to go vegan even more often but both of those thing would be very hard for me because chocolate eggs and dairy products are some of my favorite things.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Rayhan Brown's avatar
    Rayhan Brown 11/23/2020 12:05 PM
I know that I will make sure to look at expiration dates in order to make sure that I can eat the food that I get for myself before it goes bad.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Rayhan Brown's avatar
    Rayhan Brown 11/20/2020 10:58 AM
There’s a lot of tall buildings in downtown Asheville that could support turbines. There aren’t many flat spaces near Asheville though.

I had heard of biomass before and did a project on it in 7th grade. It was a short project so I didn’t get a chance to learn all of these stars on biomass and how efficient and money saving it would be. I was very surprised at how much biomass would save us in the long run.
