  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Properly Dispose of Refrigerants
How do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?

    Barret Bryson's avatar
    Barret Bryson 5/22/2020 9:37 PM
I talk with other people who have concerns similar to mine and I try to bring awareness to it as much as I can.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

    Barret Bryson's avatar
    Barret Bryson 5/22/2020 9:28 PM
I would rather use this money for experiences or doing projects.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Use Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Barret Bryson's avatar
    Barret Bryson 5/22/2020 9:25 PM
After reading about how the forests in my own town can be affected by the seriousness of the situation it put it into a more realistic perspective, I knew forests are decreasing but I would never think the ones in Asheville would. The part to me that feels overwhelming is how do we solve the issue of over-development in certain areas, as populations increase more houses will be built. A part that feels hopeful is awareness being brought to the situation. I know that we can fix this issue awareness just has to be brought to it.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings and Cities Tour a Green Roof
What did you learn on your green roof tour?

    Barret Bryson's avatar
    Barret Bryson 5/22/2020 9:19 PM
I learned that roofs can become 90 degrees hotter than the air around them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Barret Bryson's avatar
    Barret Bryson 5/22/2020 4:18 PM
My vision of a sustainable community is one that everyone compost properly to reduce local methane emissions. Asheville is already good about composting for certain businesses and many people do it on their own but if there was a way we could implement a city compost pickup it would make it much easier.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Barret Bryson's avatar
    Barret Bryson 5/22/2020 2:53 PM
I learned the need for family planning can help so many people prevent unwanted pregnancies when they can't afford to have a child. People in different locations have many different needs because people have different amounts of money and some people don't have proper places to go for medical attention and family planning.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Barret Bryson's avatar
    Barret Bryson 5/21/2020 11:49 AM
Actions I could take in my life to reduce the need to decrease peatland is to consume products with no palm oil and try to use the least amount of paper possible because both of those products are grown on peatland.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Share Bioplastic Disposal Tips
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Barret Bryson's avatar
    Barret Bryson 5/20/2020 3:25 PM
Something that concerns me post locally is how dirty our watershed is and how we don't take care of it much. Something that concerns me globally is how our populations keep rising and our resources are not unlimited.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Barret Bryson's avatar
    Barret Bryson 5/19/2020 10:36 AM
I eat a vegetarian diet which is one of the better diets when it comes to helping lower the amount of land needed to support my diet. I don't eat any meat or eggs but I do eat some dairy so I would say my diet isn't having a super negative impact on deforestation. I can decrease the amount of dairy I eat even more to have less of a negative impact and I can eat even more veggies to increase my positive impact.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Barret Bryson's avatar
    Barret Bryson 5/15/2020 12:23 PM
Before reading the article and watching the video I had never heard the term silvopasture or at least didn't remember I had. I think the biggest advantage of this type of farming and way of raising livestock is that it is very resilient which means as global warming continues and drought is more common this way allows food to still be produced and farms to be financially stable. It also to me seems much more of a humane way of raising animals.
