Indy Bui
"As a kid, I grew up with a very close connection to nature and the outdoors. For me sustainability is about preserving an important part of my life, as well as maintaining a healthy life style. I think it is important to reduce the damage to our planet in order to minimize the adverse environmental effects on our physical and mental health. Small choices can go a long way, and a long term perspective is more favorable for proper decision making."

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Indy Bui 6/08/2023 12:41 AMI never really thought that deeply about how much plastic I really use in a week or even in a day. I have always avoided plastic straws typically, but didn't even think about the plastic produce bags, or plastic cups at restaurants. Sometimes when I don't have time to cook I would eat on campus, which inevitably leads to use of plastic utensils or plastic cups for water at some places. Though I do think it is interesting that UCLA is trying to use compostable containers and cups. Alot of packaged food at the grocery store does have plastic, such as meats, snacks, and a lot of other goods as well. It is hard to avoid these, though eating less meats and snacks probably would be an overall good thing anyway. I find that it is not too difficult to avoid single use plastic in my life outside of these food related plastic items. I guess plastic wrapping along store bought goods is also probably a big contributor. I do try to drink water out of a glass mug whenever possible, and I don't really end up buying of commercial products (plastic packaging). Overall it really mainly is food that is a main contributor of my plastic use. I do want to invest in some reusable produce bags for individual items, and potentially get my meat from the butcher which uses paper instead of plastic packaging instead. Though I should look into some other ways I can cut down on plastic use in these cases. I do want to try and cook more, so I should be eating and drinking less at outside restaurants. Overall I am looking forward to learning about new ways to minimize my plastic use.-
Jonathan Tong 6/08/2023 3:57 AMI also struggle with avoiding plastic waste specifically just with food items. Whenever I purchase meat, or even some fruits and vegetables, they often come in plastic and/or styrofoam packaging, so I want to try to find ways to cut down on this. I have thought about using reusable containers and getting meat from the butcher area in grocery stores rather than the pre-packaged ones, but the pre-packaged meat always seems to be cheaper. As far as eating on campus, it might be worth trying keep plastic items with you until you can recycle them.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Indy Bui 6/08/2023 12:17 AMI feel that initially I got a lot enjoyment out of walking. I very much began to look forward to my walks home from campus in the evening, especially after going to the gym. I do realize that I am able to notice more while walking, such as the wind blowing the trees or just watch other people walking to class. I also started walking a bit around some of the buildings on campus to explore when I had 20 or 30 minutes between classes. I found some nice quiet spaces on campus that I now like. One thing recently though is that because I have become busier with school and work I have noticed that I am enjoying these walks a little less. I find that it feels like more of a waste of time since I have assignments to do and less time to myself. It is difficult to balance both of these feelings because I do truly enjoy walking, but when life gets hard it makes it also difficult to enjoy the little things. Hopefully as things settle down after finals I will start to look forward to these walks again.-
Jonathan Tong 6/08/2023 3:50 AMI feel like I relate to this a lot. I really enjoy walking too, but most of the time when I'm walking nowadays I realize that I'm in a rush and that my mind is preoccupied with things that keep me from noticing the little things in my surroundings that I usually enjoy. At the beginning of the quarter I was able to take leisurely walks pretty frequently, but I haven't had the time for one in a few weeks, so I hope I can get back to that soon!

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Advocate For Greener VehiclesHow does advocating for green vehicles in your community connect to your values? How might you be able to get others involved in advocating for the shift to fuel-efficient vehicles?
Indy Bui 5/05/2023 8:09 PMRecently and primarily due to the class, I have been trying to get some of my close friends to try and use public transit more. I understand that it is incredibly difficult to avoid driving for most of us, but I have been trying to get my friends used to not driving whenever possible. Fortunately, I was able to convince one of my friends, who drives everywhere (literally he likes to drives to the gym), to take the bus to get coffee instead of driving. Honestly, I was very proud of him for being open to the idea. Though during the same conversation another friend of mine also ridiculed both of us for wanting to take public transit. She was saying that it was so much work to take the bus rather than drive, and listing other reasons why driving was way better. This kind of pissed me off. After some reflection and thinking I do realize its impossible to convince everyone of something. I am somewhat content knowing I can make someone think about their choices and actions in a different way, even if some people might disagree.-
Matt Yamin 5/15/2023 9:22 AMI often fall into the habit of driving everywhere, too. I often have to because of my team schedule; however, due to the research I have done in this class, I try to walk a lot, especially to the gym. Walking can be a fun and fulfilling way to get some cardio in and enjoy nature at the same time.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Indy Bui 4/30/2023 7:11 PMI have always loved eating fruits and vegetables and I like to have broccoli or spinach with a lot of my meals. Unfortunately, I also have always loved and continue to love eating meat. I think that the traditional diet for most college students involves more prepackaged or frozen meals and lacks a lot of vegetables as a whole. Recently, I have been starting to cook a lot more often and I've been trying to add more vegetables to all my meals. Not eating as much meat has been pretty difficult for me to be honest. I've been trying to go to the gym and eating protein is important. I have realized that there are other ways of getting protein that may be plant based, but I do need to do further research on that. Overall I have been slowly shifting my portion of straight carbs or meats towards vegetables and it hasn't been too hard.-
Kelly Gocke 4/30/2023 10:53 PMHi Indy! I definitely agree with all of the points that you mentioned, especially in regards to the diet of college students and gym-goers. I also agree it has been hard to not eat as much meat and I still need to research more about vegetarian protein sources. I've tried doing a few meatless days per week and it definitely helps having a roommate who is vegetarian, so I would suggest finding any vegetarian friends you have and asking them for meal suggestions!

Indy Bui 4/30/2023 7:03 PMI do not have a car, and as a result I often uber or take the bus. Since joining the class and thinking about my choices as an individual and contributor to carbon emissions, I have been trying to shift away from ubering in favor of using the bus or just walking. It has been a bit hard to use the bus in all occasions, and it definitely takes more pre-planning than just calling an uber 5-10 minutes before I leave, but I have been enjoying my experiences. Kind of random, but the other day a guy I met on the bus let me hold his pet tortoises. Which I think is quite a unique experience. Otherwise, It is nice to see the various people that take the bus and to chat with a few of them on our short shared journeys. Taking the bus has also made me feel quite good about myself as I know I am making the choice to mitigate my own effects on emissions and the planet. Likewise, urban mobility is my topic for the essay and I am having fun building more personal connections to the topic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Use Public TransitHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Indy Bui 4/25/2023 5:10 PMBefore high school I would take the bus to school and typically dread waiting for it in the mornings. I did also take the metro in D.C. often and enjoyed riding the metro. I started driving in high school, and during that time I rarely used any form of public transportation. There is a sense of freedom and independence that comes from driving yourself everywhere. After high school I moved here to UCLA for college and I currently don't have my own car. In some ways it is nice to not worry about parking and paying insurance, but I do also feel that I am somewhat limited in where I go compared to my peers. I do take the bus but it does require some planning ahead compared to just driving. Though, compared to ubering or driving, taking the bus is pretty cheap. I think it is hard, especially in the U.S, to move away from cars and driving. Convenience, time saving, independence, and freedom are big things that many people value and associate with driving and not with public transportation. I do think that this is also because our public transit systems are not as trustworthy and developed as they could be. Because I currently do not have a car, I am a little more conscious about my travel habits and am more likely to take public transportation. However, I do think that If I had kept driving throughout college I would not have the same perspective as I do now. Overall it is hard to reconcile the practical positives of driving with the knowledge that cars are not very sustainable. -
Indy Bui 4/24/2023 11:41 AMRecently, I decided to walk home from a doctors appointment when typically I would take an Uber or Lyft. The walk was around 2-2.5 miles and took me around an hour. Walking home, I realized how little time daily is spent enjoying the weather and scenery. Due to the fact that walking is so significantly slower than driving or other means of travel, I was able to really observe what was going on around me. I stopped at a few small stores on the way that I would usually never go to. I also walked past a cool Japanese restaurant that I might go back to in the future. There was some sense of exploration during my walk, and it was also nice to spend some time alone. Overall I think that walking, while probably impractical at this distance and during most busy days, is an underrated practice that has been lost for most Americans. I also took some photos of some flowers on the way.-
Billy Ung 4/25/2023 3:52 PMHi Indy, I am one who tends to drive more than needed since I brought my car up moving to UCLA. Due to the increase in gas prices though, I've been more inclined to walk to places when I can. While it may be tiring I have also discovered a newfound appreciation for it as it allows me to enjoy the scenery and provides a sense of accomplishment after reaching my destination. The increase in temperature recently has really made some of these walks more painful however, I still try my best to walk as much as possible to avoid unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions.
