Industry
Find a Local Climate-Friendly Supermarket
Refrigerant Management
I will explore the interactive map in the links below to find a supermarket that does not use HFC refrigerants near my home.
Industry
Learn about Carbon Offsets
I will visit Tradewater’s website to learn more about carbon offsets, and why they are a necessary solution in combating a climate crisis.

World Clean Up Day - Sept 18
World Cleanup Day 2021 - are you ready to join in? It's so simple (just 3 steps) and together we can make a huge impact on our environment...here's how 1) Rally some friends, family, colleagues living nearby and help together as a team in person or virtually to cleanup our communities, local streets, rivers, lakes & parks (rubbish is to be found everywhere!). Why not even engage with the local schools & Kindergarten and get the children involved too. 2) Choose the day you wish to run your team activity (our suggestion is Friday 17th Sep) and create your own shift under this activity to log your VTO hrs! 3) Share photos of you & your teams in action, in one or both of the Earthforce Slack channels (add #worldcleanupday2021): #eq-earthforce-germany #eq-earthforce-global Remember to always adhere to local Covid safety regulations!
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Industry
Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
I will avoid buying and using 1 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Industry
Invite a friend to calculate the carbon footprint of their household
Individual actions are important, but people and organizations working together can make a real impact. I will share a carbon calculator with a friend and invite them to calculate the carbon footprint of their household.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Transportation
Purchase a Carbon Offset
Efficient Aviation
If I buy a plane ticket, I will purchase a carbon offset.
Land Sinks
Plant Trees
Temperate Forest Restoration
I will plant 1 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous Peoples' Forest Tenure
I will donate to Native American Rights Fund, which protects tribal natural resources and environmental rights and promotes Native American Human Rights.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Tend A GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Tom Bullotta 9/30/2021 5:42 AMGetting dumped, pulled underwater, and stuck in a river "hydraulic" struggling to get out for a good bit. Makes you realize the tremendous power of nature -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support Indigenous Peoples' Land ManagementIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Tom Bullotta 9/29/2021 10:11 AMBalance between nature/land and living beings is important to maintain the survival and lifecycle of both in coexistence-
Lucinda Young 9/30/2021 12:10 AMTonight I heard Winona LaDuke speak at a zoom panel presentation hosted by our mayor about climate change.

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Tom Bullotta 9/29/2021 10:07 AMNext up is an HVAC system in the 90s in efficiency versus the one we have that is in the 80s. Also replacing a single pane sunroom (glass and poly) and in doing so use windows with double pane glass and LowE coating. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Tom Bullotta 9/29/2021 10:06 AMI have noticed the transitions starting to fall with leaves dropping and weather getting cooler. I sometimes walk on the walking/biking/jogging path that is an old railroad track and it could be a tad wider to support everyone. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Connect With A NonprofitWhat are the most pressing issues for women, girls, and trans/nonbinary people in your community?
Tom Bullotta 9/29/2021 6:59 AMI believe in this strongly. I was on the board and helped the AD start a local DC non profit called Bridge to Freedom to bridge gaps in information and services that hinder the growth of survivors of modern slavery, -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Tom Bullotta 9/29/2021 6:46 AMI am a notoriously fast eater having grown up with many siblings, and I find that solo mindful eating allows me to focus on the meal more and eat slower (which is healthier) while also giving me time to think and reflect. As a family we avoid distractions and use the time for sharing and discussion -
Tom Bullotta 9/29/2021 6:44 AMI planted another tree yesterday -
Tom Bullotta 9/29/2021 6:42 AMTwo days to go in the challenge! Let's finish strong but more importantly keep supporting the cause with the same or more effort going forward and nudge/educate others to do the same -
Tom Bullotta 9/28/2021 12:18 PMGoing well. I am eco focused but with this challenge I have picked up steam as we reach 30 days, and plan to continue after it ends to meet the challenge of doing more -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Calculate the carbon footprint of my householdAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Tom Bullotta 9/28/2021 12:13 PMEating less meat is an area I could reduce our carbon footprint further. More virtual meetings and less client travel will also contribute by reducing plane, car, and rail travel. I did switch to a fully electric car this year which has helped my footprint.
