Spread the Word about Energy Alternatives
All Electricity Solutions
I will research and tell 1 people each day about the benefits of alternative energy sources like wind turbines, solar energy, geothermal energy, and methane digesters.

Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 60 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.

Carpooling
I will commute by carpool 6 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's

I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 3 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 120 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Industry
Listen to the Planet Money Podcast – “Sell Me Your Climate Bombs”
Planet Money recently interviewed the co-founders of Tradewater to learn about the dangerous impact that old refrigerants have on our environment. I will listen to the podcast to learn more about this necessary solution in fighting a climate crisis.

Jessica Burpee 4/28/2022 10:57 AMI set a custom action for myself to talk to JAC people about getting more compost bins on campus. I know the bins are already available here, and before Christmas break, the gentleman in charge of compost collection tole me they could manage 10 more bins - yay! But since then it has stalled. My experience is that these kinds of initiatives need someone to push them along. I sent a reminder email in December to facilities - no reaction. I know Facilities is totally overwhelmed and understaffed, with all the renos going on etc. Anyway, I thought I would try again, so I sent an email today to Facilities people in charge, and will meet with the compost collection guy next week. Wish me luck! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Jessica Burpee 4/14/2022 10:00 AMI wonder if they could go on top of the skyscrapers downtown, and on top of Mt. Royal, on the cross. -
Jessica Burpee 4/10/2022 12:24 PMOut with my niece for my daily hour walk - such a mental upper! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Spread the Word about Energy AlternativesWhat inspiration and wisdom can you gather from your family, faith, or community traditions that would help you in both communicating about and addressing our most pressing energy issues?
Jessica Burpee 4/10/2022 12:08 PMI am inspired by the people around the world who have been taking the leap and investing in renewables, including John Abbott for creating the geothermal wonder that is the AME building. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Try CarpoolingList some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Jessica Burpee 4/10/2022 12:07 PMI have an EV and I bring a friend to work twice a week. It's actually really fun, social contact that's been missing during the pandemic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support Local Food SystemsDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Jessica Burpee 4/10/2022 12:06 PMI use Lufa Farms to get most of my groceries. I love it that my food doesn't have a large carbon footprint from travelling. I love it that I know where my food comes from - I've even been to their greenhouse, which is on the roof of an industrial building in Ville St-Laurent. I love it that they don't use chemical pesticides - they use beneficial pests like ladybugs instead, to eat the aphids. Also, the tomatoes smell and taste like the middle of summer, all year round. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Jessica Burpee 4/10/2022 12:02 PMToday I went to Angrignon Park for my daily walk, and talked to my cousin Pam who lives in New Brunswick. It was so nice to catch up, and there were ducks in the pond -- one came right up to me! Even though it was drizzling, I was so warm from walking that I didn't even care. -
Jessica Burpee 4/05/2022 10:07 AMI know some of you have chosen plant-based food as an action. Here is a poster with your vegan protein sources. -
Jessica Burpee 4/05/2022 10:02 AMFor those who are trying vegan for the first time, it can take a while to get used to new recipes. Make sure you do some research on how to get your protein! Here are some recipes: https://www.forksoverknives.com/recipes/vegan-menus-collections/healthy-vegan-recipes-totally-crave-worthy/
