  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Benjamin Campbell's avatar
    Benjamin Campbell 12/08/2020 6:55 PM
I haven’t heard the term silvopasture before. I think the biggest advantage is condensing lots of services into a smaller, more productive space.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Benjamin Campbell's avatar
    Benjamin Campbell 12/08/2020 5:28 PM
I learned that refrigerants are very damaging to the environment. Supermarkets use lots of refrigerants to cool products and these can leak or can be improperly disposed of.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Benjamin Campbell's avatar
    Benjamin Campbell 12/04/2020 11:37 AM
My vision for a sustainable community looks like technologically aided, self-contained resource generation. Ideally, resources would be managed in a closed-loop, compact system local to where the resources are consumed. Waste products would be used to aid these systems. The self-contained nature of the resource generation would allow the natural environment to be preserved so it can be appreciated and preserved for future generations.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Benjamin Campbell's avatar
    Benjamin Campbell 12/03/2020 4:47 PM
I learned a lot about just how much access to family planning can help especially with gender inequality. I didn’t realize just how much access to such important services differs from developed to undeveloped nations.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Benjamin Campbell's avatar
    Benjamin Campbell 12/03/2020 12:38 PM
A lot of this information is not new to me so the only impact it has is only strengthening any impact this knowledge already has on me. The overwhelming part is the supposed solutions. They take a lot of work that many people refuse to support and they aren’t as proactive as they need to really stop and fix the damage we’ve already done and will do. The part that makes me hopeful is that the solutions are there and people are aware of them and are learning more.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Benjamin Campbell's avatar
    Benjamin Campbell 12/01/2020 6:44 PM
Making smart decisions about what purchases you make and other ways you can impact what resources are used can help.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Benjamin Campbell's avatar
    Benjamin Campbell 11/30/2020 5:18 PM
Although Asheville is very progressive there are still sexist barriers. For example, are senate representation is all male and our house representation is easily majority male.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Benjamin Campbell's avatar
    Benjamin Campbell 11/24/2020 3:21 PM
Currently I’m not eating a lot of meat or dairy products and I’m continuing to reduce the amount I do eat. The best thing I can do with my diet is asure the coffee and chocolate I eat and drink is coming from sustainable sources.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Benjamin Campbell's avatar
    Benjamin Campbell 11/23/2020 4:50 PM
I was aware of the best-by and sell-by dates but not the use-by dates. I now have a better understanding of when the food will still be good relative to these dates and can better apply that to when I eat things.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Benjamin Campbell's avatar
    Benjamin Campbell 11/20/2020 4:06 PM
Asheville has a lot of buildings with relatively even height meaning that most rooftops are not blocked by the wind. Microturbines could potentially be installed on roofs to generate electricity for use in the buildings.
