Blue and Gold Greenies

"As a first-generation Latina in college, I have always felt a strong sense of higher purpose. However, now as an Environmental Science major, the key discussion of climate change has made my desire to make a difference even greater. As I continue to explore my career options, I want to lead a sustainable life in the hopes of influencing others because for many, the lack of knowledge regarding climate change or how to protect the environment can be a barrier to contributing to change. Because the subject of sustainability can be so broad in and of itself, I believe we can all start there. Making the choice to live more sustainably can benefit the planet and all life on Earth in addition to ourselves. I like to live by the idea that since we are all intrinsically connected to the land and cannot truly be separated from it, it is crucial that we protect it and do something about the ways in which we have been failing it for the better of our future. Because I don't own a reusable flask, I've purchased plastic water bottle cases which is not ideal considering that plastic can be very harmful. However, instead of automatically getting rid of these water bottles, once I am done drinking the water, I've made sure to reuse the same bottle and refill it with water. Before recycling them, I continue to refill them until they become very flimsy.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Given that I live in the same apartment with one of my friends, we decided that it would make things easier to cook meals together since the beginning of the academic year. At first, we would often find ourselves wasting food because we never properly calculated our food portions, especially when making rice or pasta. I will say though that we would make sure to save the leftovers in a reusable container until we reached a point where we didn't want to eat the same thing for 2 or 3 days in a row. Now that we're approaching the end of the school year, I would say that we have definitely improved in this. We now cook smaller portions and would incorporate measuring cups to make just the right amount. We've also been utilizing decent sized plates or bowls to eat our meals. Serving smaller portions has helped us not contribute to food waste as much.

Yesterday, my friend and I decided to take a little trip to the Santa Monica Pier. Instead of taking an Uber there like we once did, we chose to take the bus this time. This was a much better alternative considering that public transportation not only helps reduce emissions, but is also much cheaper. In total, we spent $2.20 for our trip, which definitely saved us some money given that an Uber probably would've cost us around $25-35. Overall, we had a good time getting some exercise in as well as time away from our computer screens. We walked the pier, purchased a fruit cup from one of the vendors, and explored the area. I noticed that some of the sidewalks are very wide and filled with many trees which was nice to see. As for the weather, although the sun was out, it was still cool outside which also made it much more enjoyable.

Hi! Im glad you decided to give public transport a chance and found it enjoyable. This year, I was blessed with adventurous roommates and we did the same thing you did except we took advantage of the different line connections so after the pier, we went to the mall and ate food there. It was so much fun and as you mentioned, a lot cheaper. We amounted about 13k steps each which was relatively easy to do while having fun! I still think I wouldn't take public transportation on my own especially in areas that I don't know, but I do think that navigating between lines has been made easier through technology and that having company could encourage me to venture out of Westwood while being environmentally conscious. Good for us for making exploring fun, cheaper, and environmentally friendly!

Keeping up with my eco challenge of eating more fruits and vegetables hasn't been too difficult. I have a lot of favorite fruits and vegetables, and I would say that now, I've recently been implementing different types of vegetables into my meals. Last week I had some asparagus and squash, and today I had broccoli and green beans for dinner. I'm glad to say that because my roommate and I oftentimes cook our meals together, I've encouraged her to try different vegetables as well. Not only are they healthy to consume, but make us feel good about ourselves in general.

Hi Karena, this is something I've been trying to incorporate as my eco challenge as well. Vegetables are a very important source of a lot of vitamins and minerals, so it's great that you're getting more of it. I also think its so cool you've also recruited your roommate in eating more greens as well. Your broccoli and green beans look great!

I agree that not only are fruits and veggies good for you, they make you feel good! I think it is also fun to go to farmers markets and pick out seasonal fruits and veggies as it keeps things new, and farmers markets also have very fresh produce so it is extra delicious!

Today, I chose to put my phone to the side during all my meals. Sometimes I am very tempted to pick up my phone and watch a video while I eat, but I've noticed that when I do this, I don't get to enjoy my food. Considering that we are close to finals, I am going to make it a thing to really limit the use of my phone, especially when eating. This will allow me to truly have a mental break for myself and enjoy a peaceful environment. Even when I do go home and share my meal times with my family, keeping myself away from any distractions will allow me to catch them up on my life, hear about how their days are going, and be able to get some words of encouragement from them since whenever finals week approaches, it is oftentimes a bit stressful.

Hi Karena, I have been doing this as well! At the start of the quarter I ate a few meals without spending time on my phone, and I've actually made a habit of it. I'm able to enjoy my food mindfully and also shorten the time I spend at lunch because I'm not on my phone. I know that I'm going to continue doing this going forward since it is a great practice!

I think that this is a brilliant strategy to decrease phone usage. When you make a habit of using your phone while eating, you'll likely end up checking it when you are studying. However by setting time aside to be phone free you are setting yourself up for success for the weeks to come. I have been on my phone more than usual lately, and I will definitely make a step towards weaning off it by setting it aside the next time I eat.

Yesterday my roommate and I took a walk to the grocery store to purchase some items we needed. This time around we remembered to take and reuse the 10 cent bags we've purchased in the past that have been piling up in our apartment. We also recently invested in a little shopping cart which is extremely convenient so that we can purchase several items and not have trouble carrying all the bags. Something I noticed that could potentially make these trips to the grocery much better would be the cracks on some of the sidewalks. I don't usually pay attention to them, but this time I did since I was pulling our grocery cart and would feel it get stuck. This may also be unfavorable to deal with especially for wheelchair users.

Hi Kareena, the shopping cart idea is wonderful I honestly didn't even know that you could buy those. On my weekly trips to the grocery store, I usually drive just because I don't want to try to carry all my bags so far, but I'll definitely look into getting a shopping cart that I can share with my roommates! Also, the cracks and bumps in the sidewalk can be massive around here sometimes, I even have to struggle to get around them, I can't imagine how it must be for people with wheelchairs or even crutches.

Hi Karena! Often when I go to the market I often forget to bring the plastic bags that I have piled up at home. Recently, however, I made it my duty to always remember to bring the reusable bags with me not only because it helps reduce less plastic being consumed but also saves me a few dollars!

Hi Karena! The shopping cart seems like a great idea, especially when you have a lot of groceries to carry back to your dorm, but I can see how the many cracks in the sidewalk can be annoying. I also recently went to Trader Joe's for some items and instead of walking there empty handed, I brought a couple of my reusable tote bags to avoid wasting plastic bags that would otherwise pile up in my room and probably eventually be thrown away.

I've been doing a great job of eating many fruits and veggies each day. The fruits I usually have are mandarins, blackberries, raspberries, or strawberries. This morning I decided to change it up a little and had mandarin slices, raspberries, and a banana. Sometimes I forget how good bananas can be, and since the fruits I typically eat are high in vitamin C, adding a banana to the mix was a good form of getting in some potassium. I hope to purchase some different fruits and vegetables soon so that I can switch it up more. I'll probably buy some cucumber, melon, and green beans. Every fruit and vegetable has their own benefits. As I've tried my best to keep up with this eco-challenge, I have noticed that it has made me feel better about myself as I've been avoiding the unhealthy snacks. Anytime I want to have a snack I stop myself from wanting to get chips, and grab a fruit instead.

Hello, as I have also been trying my best to follow through with this particular ecochallenge as well, I empathize a lot with the points you made in this post. I have been trying to replace my snacks with fruits , and I realized that eating fruits can actually be as enjoyable, if not more, as eating unhealthy snacks that we typically think taste better than anything else. I realized how they can come in a lot more varieties as well, as each fruit has their own unique enjoyable aspects to them. I knew that eating fruits is healthier than eating unhealthy snacks, and as I followed through, I actually do feel a lot healthier and more energized in my daily lives, helping me to work in a clearer mindset and motivating me to keep sticking with this ecochallenge. Also knowing that this also helps our environment, this has definitely been one of my most enjoyable ecochallenges I have been doing. I also liked your point about maybe diversifyinig things a little more as well. I have been mostly eating banana, orange, and some berries, I think it will also be nice to incorporate other enjoyable alternatives as well, like melon, cucumber, along with other things you've mentioned!

Today my roommate and I decided that we wanted to go for a little afternoon walk. The weather was enjoyable, the sun was out, but it was still very cool. This time we chose to leave through the alley way which is the picture I have included down below. I like that there are grass shrubs along the sides of the sidewalk, however, I will say that something that could possibly be improved is the sidewalks itself. Considering that this is an alleyway, cars are always making there way through, and since there is only a sidewalk on one side for everyone to walk on, sometimes we find ourselves having to step down to let others go through since the side walk is a bit narrow. Perhaps making the sidewalk a bit broader or adding another one to the other side somehow with the same amount of greenery would be a good improvement to consider and would make it much safer.

    • Derek Ren's avatar
      Derek Ren 5/09/2023 2:28 PM
Hi Karena! Thanks for bringing attention to this issue and for your thoughtful suggestions on how to improve the alleyway. I completely agree with you that adding more sidewalks or broadening the existing one can greatly improve the safety of the alleyway. It's great to hear that you appreciate the greenery, but it's also important to ensure that pedestrians are not put at risk by having to share a narrow sidewalk with cars. Providing safe and accessible pedestrian infrastructure is one of the solutions recommended by the Drawdown EcoChallenge to mitigate climate change. By promoting walking and biking as viable modes of transportation, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, improve air quality, and enhance public health. To add on to widening the sidewalks, another solution that can be considered is creating dedicated bike lanes or multi-use paths to separate pedestrians from cars. This would encourage more people to walk and bike, reducing reliance on cars and mitigating the negative impacts of transportation on the environment.

Today I decided to take a walk around Westwood with my roommate . It was a good time to step out for a little break and get some fresh air considering that we've been studying for midterms. While walking back up to our apartment we noticed that the bushes in the divider were getting some of their color back. Not too long ago, they appeared a bit dried out and not many colorful flowers were out, so this was nice to see. Also, even though it rained a little today, I always feel that whenever it does rain, the air definitely feels a bit cleaner which makes walks more enjoyable. As for something that could be improved to make these walks even more enjoyable is the amount of trash on the streets. My friend and I did notice a lot of food wrappers, which is unfortunate as it could make its way into our oceans through the sewers, ultimately affecting our sea life.

Hello, I think this is a great ecochallenge. I have been partaking in the action item about walking instead of riding transportations, and they have been great for me as well. Like you said, it helped me to appreciate our surroundings more and learn new things that I haven't noticed before. I also think your point about food wrappers and trash is a really valid point. I recently did an ecochallenge regarding logging food waste and trying to minimize them, and I learned how prevalent it is, how easy it is to waste so much without even realizing, and how much it impact our environment, like affecting sea life like you mentioned.

Today I was able to have my last two meals of the day without any distractions. Usually I've had a bad habit of keeping my phone near me, even if I don't plan on using it, but this time around I decided to leave it in my room. It is very tempting to want to use my phone whenever I see a notification appear, even if I tell myself to not use it during a certain time. As soon as the phone lights up, I catch myself eyeing it, so in order to avoid this I chose to remove it from my reach. I highly encourage others to practice mindful eating. It has taught me to practice self-discipline much more. I've found that when incorporating this eco-challenge and freeing myself from any distractions, there is more time to enjoy my food, and enjoy conversations, especially when sharing this time with others. Because my parents worked today, and my sister had school, we didn't get to share breakfast and lunch time together, however, we did when it came to dinner. In a way, I've already practiced mindful eating often when eating with my family. We usually take this time to unwind and relax while getting to hear each other out. For instance, we each shared how our days were going, and any plans we had for the week. It is only when I am alone that I want to have my phone with me and scroll through social media, yet during the times I've made sure to not use it, it has always been extremely enjoyable and peaceful.
