Transportation
Use Muscle Power
Multiple Transportation Solutions
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.
Industry
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bioplastics
I will avoid buying and using 4 single-use plastics and instead replace them with durable options.
Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Industry
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Industry
Go Paperless
Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Health and Education
Connect With A Nonprofit
Health and Education
I will connect with a local nonprofit working on issues affecting women, girls, and/or trans/nonbinary people in my community, and find out how I can get involved or become a member.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Ross Carroll 4/14/2022 9:10 AMUp until recently, when it came to recycling I only thought of things like paper and bottles/cans. However, from this class and others I have begun to learn about repurposing and other aspects of recycling. I think incorporating these when I move out of my house this summer will be difficult but extremely beneficial. Rather than just throwing out things that I don't need (because it is much easier) I plan on trying to repurpose, recycle etc. all my old things that are not able to be sold. While at the time I know it will add extra stress and hard work, but I am sure that afterwards, knowing I have done all I can to reuse, repurpose etc. all of these items that I would just take to a dump will make me feel much better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered SinksMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Ross Carroll 4/14/2022 9:01 AMAccording to a source on Google, families can have "up to four meals a week" of fish. I very rarely eat fish (unless I am visiting family in Scotland, as fish and chips is an extremely common dish there.) I generally stick to beef and chicken for my protein, and will eat fish maybe once every 5-6 months on special occasions, so my dietary choices certainly fall within these guidelines. As someone who isn't a huge fan of fish in general, I feel I do not have to take any steps to ensure I stay within these guidelines, which is exactly why I chose this action, as it has very little effect on me, but a large effect on the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Ross Carroll 3/29/2022 3:26 PMDue to this community being relatively small, I do not need to worry much about my transportation choices affecting my community engagement. I walk where I can walk to and drive when I have to. My experience doesn't really differ at all depending on my mode of transportation. When I need to get somewhere, that's really all I think about. Whether I be walking, driving, biking, I am not focused on the trip or my experience, merely getting from point A to point B. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Ross Carroll 3/29/2022 3:25 PMI regularly use single use coffee cups, food trays from places like the Student Union, and bags. I always recycle my bags, whether they be paper or plastic. I could start using a travel mug and bring that to coffee shops rather than using a plastic cup. I could buy a reusable tray from the SUB to reduce my paper tray usage. Finally, I could buy reusable grocery bags from tops to reduce my paper bag usage.
