Maxwell's actions
Transportation
Use Public Transit
Public Transit
I will use public transit 5 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Land Sinks
Explore My Area
Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 90 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
More Fruits And Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cups of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Restore Wetlands
Coastal Wetland Restoration
I will volunteer 6 hours with a wetland restoration project in my region.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Industry
Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Tend A GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Maxwell Carter 2/21/2022 12:33 PMI have gone on many roadtrips though some remote areas of the Western United States. Most of these trips have been solo, and when I am alone in wilderness, or on the side of the road, listening to the sound of silence, or hearing water gurgling by, I have felt truly connected to place. I remember once I was crossing near a lake at midnight in eastern Oregon, and I turned my car off, got out, and sat outside looking at the stars and their reflections on the lake. It was my birthday, and it's hard to describe but I felt an immense feeling of connectedness, and the weight of the enormity of the universe. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Maxwell Carter 2/21/2022 12:28 PMIt allows you to feel more in-tune of where you are or where you live. Learning about all the resources you consume, such as the water you drink or where the food you eat comes from encourages you to acknowledge it's gift and gives you a chance to be thankful for what you have. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Maxwell Carter 2/14/2022 11:13 AMMore is generally more expensive, and less accessible on a day to day basis. Rural farmers or pastoralists don't butcher their livestock daily as they rely on them for milk, fur, etc. Eating meat is one of the most devastating impacts on deforestation, for example large swaths of the Amazon Rainforest are cleared for grazelands. A large part of industrial agriculture is also used to feed livestock to the detriment of the land. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Maxwell Carter 2/07/2022 12:19 PMShopping for new clothes at a thrift store, reuse glass jars from pasta sauce, salsa, etc. Recycle everything that I can. -
Maxwell Carter 1/31/2022 12:20 PMWent to the coast for the weekend, and cooked all our own food in the Air BnB where we stayed. Only explored the town through walking. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Calculate the carbon footprint of my householdAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Maxwell Carter 1/31/2022 12:11 PMDiet is one of my primary contributions to my carbon footprint. Single-use plastics, excessive packaging, and non-locally sourced foods contribute significantly, and I need to continue to make efforts to cut down on these. -
Maxwell Carter 1/31/2022 12:07 PMBeginning to be more mindful during every meal. -
Maxwell Carter 1/17/2022 10:19 AMTaking it one day at a time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Maxwell Carter 1/17/2022 10:17 AMEating mindfully allows me the chance to appreciate the food I am eating, where it came from, how it tastes, and how it makes my body feel. I am also free from distractions and able to better engage with my girlfriend, whom I eat meals with everyday. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Maxwell Carter 1/17/2022 10:10 AMSustainable community would accomplish a self sustaining and independent cycle of waste and renewability. MSU Methane Digester would be a good example of a system that produces waste, repurposes it, and recycles the waste back into itself as resources (electricity, fertilizer, etc.). If a system such as that could be used for every large-scale industrial farm complex around the world, methane emissions would be greatly reduced.
