REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Lisa Casto 6/30/2021 12:28 PMLack of representation in management and government. Also since I live in Texas, the party in power is putting much effort into reducing reproductive options as well as failing to provide healthcare and childcare both of which impact women inequitably. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about BiocharCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Lisa Casto 5/11/2021 12:01 PMYes, it makes the soil more fertile, helps it hold on to helpful microorganisms and creates clean energy.-
Melinda Enochs-Baucom 5/14/2021 6:25 PMI've read about the creation and use of biochar, and I'm thinking about using one of my raised beds as the "pit" for the burning. I have read that it's not good to just harvest wood for it. Large dead branches are picked up in our town and chipped and the mulch is free to residents. However, the small stuff is supposed to go in the trash! I'm saving twigs and small branches to make biochar instead of sending it to the landfill.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Forest-Friendly Foods 2How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?
Lisa Casto 4/30/2021 7:40 AMI passed up ordering my fave Scottish oat crackers because I couldn't find a brand that didn't have some kind of palm oil. That stuff is everywhere!! I can make my own so I guess that is what I will have to do.-
Melinda Enochs-Baucom 4/30/2021 3:58 PMChanging food habits can be so hard, can't it? When I read the list of things that had palm oil, I was shocked. I am going to have to change my brand of dog food!

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Express My Support For Equitable Biking InfrastructureWhat do you like most about biking in your city? What would you like to improve?
Lisa Casto 4/27/2021 1:49 PMI like biking in the parks and on trails. I don't feel very safe on the roads so I'd like to see more dedicated bike paths that connect up with places people need to go. We can ride our bikes to the grocery store and restaurants. I just signed a petition from People for Bikes that asks the Federal Highway Administration to make roads safer for bikes and pedestrians.-
Melinda Enochs-Baucom 4/28/2021 8:28 AMI will look up that organization. My town is not very bike-friendly, although there is a long term plan through the parks department to connect the town via hike and bike trails.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about the Legacy of RedliningHow does city planning and design relate to equity and climate change?
Lisa Casto 4/26/2021 11:47 AMThe discussion of redlining relates how actions in the past continue to be the cause of inequity and negative impacts on these communities. Unfortunately, these practices continue today. In my own suburban community there is a campaign to prevent the building of apartments or any kind of denser or more affordable housing. Their arguments are the negative impacts on traffic and schools. The end result of preventing affordable housing is bad for all of us. Young people will move away because they can't afford to live here. We will be homogenous. Young families won't be able to move here. Jobs will be hard to fill. Traffic will increase because workers won't be able to live in my town. That causes pollution and forces people to spend more on transportation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Lisa Casto 4/22/2021 1:54 PMI knew a lot about the seafood industry from working with the culinary students at my college. I read more in-depth about tuna, salmon and crawfish. I was already avoiding crawfish from outside the US. I sure miss the days when my uncles would share the fish they caught from lakes and ponds in Oklahoma. -
Lisa Casto 4/20/2021 6:14 PMI promoted our Drawdown team on our church social media this week! And I made a poster about it for our Earth Day event on Saturday. Excited about sharing this fun and informative way to make a difference!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Lisa Casto 4/19/2021 6:26 PMI started moving hygiene products to recyclable or reusable containers such as deodorant replacement in a glass jar and bar shampoo and conditioner. -
Lisa Casto 4/13/2021 8:02 PMI added some new actions today that are recommended by our UU friends. See if you can get more points! -
