Hey guys I'd love to share some recent shopping experiences at grocery stores. There are many things that we can easily start doing to protect our environment when going to grocery stores.
Firstly, we could reuse and bring our own bags. I got some plastic bags last quarter from the grocery stores, but I found it wasn't a good idea to just throw them away after the first use. So from then on, I brought those bags with me every time I shopped and I'm still reusing them now. I plan to use them until they really wear out. It would be much better if you have bags that are made up of more environmentally friendly materials than plastics! Avoid getting more new plastic bags from the grocery stores.
Secondly, we can consider the packaging when making purchasing decisions. For example, I was picking a dozen of eggs from a variety of choices. I wanted an organic one, which ruled out most options and left me with two brands. The eggs of those two brands had similar sizes and prices. I couldn't decide which one to take, but then I realized that one used plastic whereas the other used paper for packaging. I immediately went for the paper one. If you ever find it hard to decide which one to buy, consider the packaging!

I have had many similar experiences! Over the past four years at UCLA, I have accumulated many random tote bags from different campus organizations and programs, and I have finally gotten into the habit of remembering to take them when I go grocery shopping. I also tend to carry my backpack with me most of the time, so even on days when I forget bags or take an impromptu trip to the grocery store, I am able to avoid getting plastic bags. On occasion, I will need to get a bag or two, but when this happens I make sure to really minimize the number of bags I’m getting. Additionally, my roommates and I are pretty good about using those bags for different purposes so that they don’t just go to waste. I also have more recently been paying attention to packaging. I honestly hadn’t thought of that in a direct sense until about a year ago when I saw a pack of make-up wipes packaged individually (each wipe was in it’s own mini package). At first, I thought it would be really useful to buy because then I could avoid having to take the entire pack when I was going on a weekend trip or spending the night at a friend’s. However, I quickly realized that it was actually extremely wasteful to package each one in that way, as so much extra plastic was being used. I knew that the very very minor inconvenience of my larger pack of makeup wipes taking up a little bit more space in my bag was not enough of an issue to buy this pack. Since then, I have been much more cognizant of different forms of packaging.

I visited Trader Joe's earlier today and just found out they have something called "reusable flower bags." They are trying to reduce the dependence on disposable bags. One way in which they are achieving that is through reusable flower bags, those are weaved by materials from recycled plastic bottles. The recycled plastic resins make the bags water-resistant in interiors. Their sizes are perfect for flowers. They are triangle-shaped, with a pointed end to place the stems and a wide opening to fit the flowers and leaves. They're available in many colors, including pale blue, charcoal black, homey beige, and cool, winter green. They're easy to clean and re-use, simply wipe the inside with a towel until dry. Check out next time you buy flowers from there!
