How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

Recently, I have undergone a significant shift in my approach to fashion, moving away from the allure of fast fashion and embracing a more conscious and sustainable mindset. Instead of succumbing to the short trend cycles, I have chosen to build a timeless wardrobe filled with essential, foundational pieces. I have come to realize that these classics, like a well-fitted pair of jeans, dress slacks, a leather jacket, and solid-color t-shirts, form the backbone of a versatile and enduring personal style. By focusing on these integral pieces, I am able to avoid the allure of fleeting trends and instead create a wardrobe that stands the test of time. Shifting my attention to footwear, I have adopted a successful strategy of limiting myself to only one pair per type of shoe. This means owning a single pair of sneakers, sandals, and boots.

While cultivating a wardrobe of basic pieces, I have discovered that simplicity does not equate to dullness. I remain passionate about fashion and expressing my personality through my clothing. However, instead of focusing on buying many clothing items, my attention has shifted toward reimagining and reinventing the pieces I already possess. I have learned to embrace the power of accessories in transforming and elevating my looks. By carefully selecting accessories that complement my existing wardrobe, such as a colorful baseball cap or sunglasses with uniquely-shaped frames, I can add personality and flair to my outfits without compromising on sustainability.

When considering new additions to my wardrobe, I now prioritize versatility. I ensure that each piece I acquire can be worn in multiple ways and paired with various items already in my collection. This approach not only enhances the longevity of the individual garment but also promotes a more sustainable and mindful consumption pattern.

Overall, I have come to view fashion as a creative process of mixing and matching, rather than a pursuit of accumulating a vast quantity of clothing. I have discovered that working with a smaller, curated wardrobe actually sparks greater creativity and rewards me with a deeper sense of satisfaction. Each day, I relish the opportunity to craft unique outfits from the limited but carefully selected pieces I own, showcasing my personal style in a mindful and sustainable manner.

After you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?

    Talulla Chow's avatar
    Talulla Chow 6/07/2023 10:28 PM
Using the calculator, I determined that my household's carbon footprint amounts to 5.35 tons of CO2 per month. Among various factors, two key areas that stood out as major contributors were our eating habits and the number of flights we take.

Ever since I embarked on the EcoChallenges, I have made a conscious effort to significantly reduce my meat consumption. I observed that this simple change had a positive impact on our carbon footprint, particularly when considering the collective effect of our entire family eating less meat. I have personally found it surprisingly easy and achievable to decrease my meat intake, and I believe it would be even more effortless for my parents and sister to adopt this practice at home. If all four of us commit to reducing our meat consumption permanently or even incorporating vegetarian days into our routine, we can make a substantial contribution toward reducing our carbon footprint.

Regarding the number of flights, it's important to note that my dad has around 5-8 mandatory business trips each year, which are beyond his control. However, we can still make significant improvements in this area. The remaining flights are usually for family vacations, and we can reduce their impact by selecting destinations that are closer and accessible by car or train instead of short-haul flights. Additionally, we can consider limiting international travel to once every two years instead of an annual occurrence.

By implementing these changes, we can make considerable progress in reducing our carbon footprint, making a positive environmental impact while still maintaining our lifestyle and travel opportunities.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

I decided to dedicate an hour of my time to run the loop around UCLA, a route I had often heard about but never explored. To make the experience more enjoyable, I invited a friend to join me. This endeavor turned out to be immensely fulfilling, not only because I discovered a new running path, but also because it allowed me to develop a deeper appreciation for the UCLA campus and the pleasant weather of Los Angeles in general.

While completing the 4-mile loop, I came to realize the remarkable accessibility of everything on campus, particularly when compared to other college campuses where bicycles or cars are often necessary for transportation. The experience of exercising outdoors, rather than inside a gym as I typically do, brought a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of enjoyment. I realized that I sometimes take the campus for granted, as I usually find myself speedwalking with headphones on, barely taking notice of my surroundings.

However, running with my friend meant leaving the headphones behind and actively embracing the opportunity to look up and truly appreciate the beauty of our campus and its surrounding grounds. It was a chance to slow down, connect with nature, and savor the unique atmosphere that UCLA offers. This experience reminded me to pause and take in the sights and sounds that I often overlook during my busy daily routines.

I get so caught up with my busy life and being indoors so much that I sometimes forget it is nice to connect with nature. By spending time outdoors and appreciating where I am and the beautiful world around me, I usually feel better about myself and the place I am in life. Nature makes me feel at peace.

What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

    Talulla Chow's avatar
    Talulla Chow 6/07/2023 10:10 PM
I have discovered that implementing the principles of "refuse" and "reuse" has made a significant impact on reducing waste in my life. "Refuse" has been particularly easy to incorporate, as I frequently decline plastic straws offered at coffee shops and restaurants. During a recent family dinner at a restaurant, the waiter placed straws on our table without asking for our preference. Concerned about the potential waste, I promptly flagged down the waiter and politely informed them that we didn't require straws, as I didn't want them to be discarded if left unused.

Similarly, when ordering takeout on The Hill, I consciously opt not to include a plastic straw when getting a soda cup, choosing instead to drink directly from the rim. This simple choice eliminates the need for an additional single-use item.

Regarding "reuse," I practice this principle when using single-use items, such as a plastic water bottle. During a recent international trip, my reusable water bottle was too large to bring along. Instead of purchasing new bottled water, I utilized a plastic water bottle that I already had and refilled it throughout the journey, treating it as a reusable container. This way, I maximized its usefulness and minimized unnecessary waste. Even when using single-use items, I strive to extract as much value from them as possible, understanding the importance of reducing waste in every scenario.

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I frequently visit Starbucks to study and in the past, I would use their plastic cups each time. However, I made a conscious decision to reduce my single-use plastic consumption by purchasing a reusable tumbler specifically for my visits to Starbucks and other coffee shops. Since Starbucks encourages the use of reusable cups, I found it to be a fantastic solution to minimize the amount of plastic waste I generate in my daily routine. Now, instead of relying on single-use cups every time I study there, I can simply bring my own tumbler and enjoy my drinks without contributing to the accumulation of plastic waste.

Today, I took my first step towards reducing my animal product consumption by having a meatless meal as part of the "Reduce Animal Products" EcoChallenge. Living on The Hill, I decided to try Kra Pao Tofu from Feast, which was a seasoned tofu dish served with white rice and a fried egg, to which I added bean sprouts and spinach banchan to get in more veggies. This experience made me realize how accessible vegetarian/vegan meals are, even while living on-campus, as there is almost always a plant-based option available alongside the meat option.

Reflecting on my future plans, I recognized that I will need to reduce my meat consumption further, as I will be living off-campus in an apartment next year. Being raised on Chinese food, I plan to incorporate more meatless options in my cooking, and this meal reminded me of the abundant vegetarian options in Asian cuisine. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience UCLA's amazing dining halls, and I look forward to continuing this habit next year, even though I won't have the same level of accessibility.

Since I started being vegetarian years ago, tofu has been such a staple in my diet. It's just such a versatile food and I love seeing non-vegetarians like you willing to try vegetarian meals. Also now I really want to try this at Feast it looks so good :)
