REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Watch a Video about Methane DigestersWhat does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?
Kylie Cipriano 12/04/2020 9:17 PMMy vision of a sustainable community is of one that has all its necessities right there. It produces all the food, electricity, and resources it needs. It is fully self sustaining. In reality there are thing we can't get in our community that would be my exception. But everything the community can self produce it should. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Kylie Cipriano 12/03/2020 7:32 PMI learned that family planning is not something that everyone has access to. And that there are some places where there is no sex ed. The need for information, education, and family planning resources is higher in countries where sex/reproduction is a taboo topic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Kylie Cipriano 12/03/2020 7:03 PMThe more I learn the more issues I realize we have. The more aware and passionate I am about promoting good and Earth healthy habits. It feels overwhelming because a lot of people aren't seeing these issues/taking them seriously.I feel hopeful because of how our education system is teaching us about this, it makes these issues more well known and gives our generation a better basis for addressing environmental issues. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Kylie Cipriano 12/01/2020 5:50 PMYou can avoid using products typically made from palm. Or work to support environmental preservation, and try to reduce your carbon footprint to lessen global warming, which would in turn lessen the extreme conditions that allow such large wildfires to exist. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Kylie Cipriano 11/30/2020 3:16 PMIn my community one barrier that exists are social/societal standards, there are certain fields such as construction where women aren’t commonly working the few women who do work in them are often discriminated against by their male colleagues. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Kylie Cipriano 11/24/2020 7:45 PMMy diet is currently negatively impacting deforestation. I eat chocolate, drink coffee every morning and I eat meat once a day. I do avoid a lot of palm and soy oils because they make me sick. My family has worked on eating less meat and it's going pretty well, another way you could help forests is by donating to fundraisers to help conserve them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Kylie Cipriano 11/23/2020 4:00 PMI will stop viewing sell by and best if used by dates as catch all phrases. There are many factors that play into the quality/safety of our food. The labels are not made for our safety so we must not treat them as such. This will help me make better decisions regarding the longevity of my purchases. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Kylie Cipriano 11/23/2020 7:47 AMEating more meat effects the planet in many ways, the land needed is often left damaged, livestock releases large amounts of methane and any runoff from the farms is horrible for the environment. On top of that the living conditions the animals are kept in are horrific. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Kylie Cipriano 11/20/2020 9:22 PMThey could be installed at the tops of industrialized mountains or atop the tallest buildings downtown. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Kylie Cipriano 11/20/2020 8:38 PMI have heard of biomass technology before but didn't have a great understanding of it. One thing I learned that think is really important is that biomass technology should not be the end goal for our energy needs, it is something we can use along the way but at the end of the day it is still producing carbon emissions.
