Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Jojo Cook 4/22/2023 2:26 PMSpending time outdoors really helps you to understand more of the little goings on in your area. In the two hours I spent out at the beach, I noticed so many little things -- it helps that I was on my knees the whole time looking for sea glass. I had the chance to be still in many moments, just taking in all the moving parts around me; birds in the surf, kelp tumbling in the waves, fog banks and clouds moving and changing, people passing through, even down to the little plants just sprouting up from the dunes. All of these things combined created an awesome little experience for me to hold on to and helped to paint a more detailed picture of the place I live. -

The deck mini-garden is now fully decked out! I found an awesome "velociraptor" spiky aloe plant, some scarlet begonias (and a touch of the blues), and SO MANY SUCCULENTS! If y'all are ever for want of some sweet succs, bypass the fancy plant stores and go straight to Walmart. Aside from my chives, all these plants came from the Marina Walmart garden center. They have the HOOKUP. I can't wait to spend more time each day checking in with my new budding buddies! :) -
Jojo Cook 4/18/2023 6:34 PMThis is my (slightly late) starting post about my garden tending. I had gotten some plants for this rack last spring, but they all basically died back last fall and I had given up growing and wasn't going to replace them. Not too long before the class Eco Challenge was announced, I saw that my chive plants had actually started coming back (in this photo they've basically doubled/tripled in volume since the start of April) and decided that I would give my mini-garden a second chance. This week, I plan to get some fresh potting soil, dump the old stuff and dead trimmings in the neighborhood green bin, and re-green my balcony. I hope that once I get some more and potentially leafier plants, I can spend more time each day tending them than I do now (~5 minutes for a water and tiny trims). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Jojo Cook 4/16/2023 8:00 PMI really think it does. I'd known a thing or two about food freshness before looking into it -- specifically the trick about seeing if an egg floats in a cup of water or not to tell if it's gone bad yet -- but other stuff in the past I've just taken a look at whatever number date I see first and gone off of that. I also noticed on my own that getting the milk cartons with a sooner sell by date was cheaper, but even past that date the milk still tasted fine with half or more still in it. Knowing that these dates are more flexible than they seem gives me the peace of mind to play it more by ear when it comes to keeping foods around for longer than printed. As long as it doesn't look or smell off, I don't think it'll kill me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Smart Seafood ChoicesMany states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?
Jojo Cook 4/13/2023 9:53 AMIt's been a while since I've actually done a deep pore over of the updated Seafood Watch site since they dropped the app; many of the current advisories are concerning fish that are at vulnerable population levels, overfished, or come through methods that are ecologically destructive or lead to disproportionate impacts on other animals (things like giant sea bass, smelt, and most species of shark are on the red list for California). I don't often eat fish, but the fish I do is almost always bought from local sources or are clearly labelled/certified sustainable. -
Jojo Cook 4/13/2023 9:38 AMI got to practice sustainability in the form of reusing/mending old clothing this week. I dug up this old skirt of mine that I plan to wear to an event on Saturday, but I was worried I'd have to go out and get something totally different because it didn't quite fit right anymore. I told my mom about it, and she gave me this AWESOME tip for any clothes you may have with an elastic waistband that's gotten a bit small: if you cut a hole in the fabric just big enough to where you can get to the elastic, snip the elastic in half and suddenly all that fabric bunched around the elastic will give out and you'll have a wider garment. I got my skirt to fit perfectly again! I'll be able to wear it waaay longer than I would have otherwise. -
Jojo Cook 4/08/2023 3:12 PMI had a LOT of time to eat mindfully today. First, I sat in the trunk of my car to eat my breakfast after making it to the MBA volunteer lot, and it was really cool to take my time and more or less come awake alongside my surroundings. Then for my lunch break while on shift, I challenged myself to go the full 30 minute block without checking my phone, and it really went great! I got a later lunch block, which meant that almost everyone from the afternoon shift was already in the guide lounge area by the time I dropped in to rest. I talked to at least 4 different people that I hadn't before and I probably wouldn't have if I was just sitting there on my phone while eating. -
Jojo Cook 4/05/2023 6:57 PMChoosing to eat mindfully without distractions was a bit of a difficult transition at first - I've been going "mindful lite" more or less, no screens up but still with some background music. My roommate recently left our unit so it's been hard to do something where I feel so alone. But today, I got some really awesome news and decided immediately to ride that high as I made dinner and ate outside on my patio. Maybe it was the rush, but it wasn't half as lonely as I thought it would feel. I even got to do a spot of bird watching - dark eyed juncos were playing on the downstairs fence! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Tend A GardenHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Jojo Cook 4/01/2023 5:29 PMI remember the first time (and the only time, really) I had ever killed a deer. It was towards the end of archery season, and we were just about to call it quits when we finally came up a doe just a couple feet down the hill from the road we'd walked in on (I had an either sex youth tag). I had always been taught about the cycles of give and take in nature, about gratitude for sacrifice, etc. but it never really felt as raw as it did until I was looking right in that animal's eyes through my sight. I had this sense that she knew what I was going to do, but she didn't really care, because that's just how things are. You're born, you take what you can, then you give it all back eventually. I was just there to cash in. She wasn't the healthiest deer, so we ended up taking almost all of her meat and turning it into honey-teriyaki marinated jerky. I was so proud to pack it in all my lunches and give away bags upon bags of it to friends and neighbors.-
Liliana Elias 4/01/2023 10:52 PMThat's honestly really cool that you were able to hunt a deer and use its meat for jerky, and it's even better that you kept in mind the concept of showing gratitude toward the animal's sacrifice. If it really came down to hunting animals for our daily meals I think I would have a hard time doing it, so I applaud you for being brave.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Jojo Cook 4/01/2023 5:23 PMNormally I scroll on my phone while I eat lunch during my breaks at the aquarium, but today I started off my mindfulness by checking what I needed to check before pulling out my food, and then setting it to do not disturb until I was done. While I was eating, I was more aware of the subtle things happening around me, whether it was conversations being held between others in the break room or the sight of people passing by the windows or farther away on the sidewalk. It was pretty nice feeling so widely aware and not just zoned in on one specific thing.
