  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Eating smaller portions can benefit people overall by leading to a healthy lifestyle. Not only that but you can essentially save money by not having to buy so much food at a time and overall. Along with that is the benefit of losing weight and allowing more people to get food.

How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

Eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affects myself by bringing in more vitamins and essential nutrients for my body while also reducing the amount of iron from the meat. This positively affects our planet by reducing the need for more meat production in turn reducing the greenhouse gases released by cows and decreasing the land needed for livestock farming. This positively affects other people by making the world a little better to live in.

How does using human-powered transportation make you feel compared to using other methods of transportation?

Using human-powered transportation makes me feel fit and healthy. By biking, skating, or any other method that I have used, it makes me be a lot more active throughout the day and does wonders for my brain. I've noticed that my mood is generally way better than it was before and that is super cool. Sometimes driving in the car to go a short distance makes me feel hella lazy sometimes.

I went hiking in the mountain one time with my friend. We started extremely early on a summer day after it had just rained the day before and the mist that rose all around the trees as we walked and it changed the way I viewed mornings and forests. Instead of focusing on how tired I was at that time I just was awed and excited to continue the walk.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

Spending more time outdoors can enhance your sense of place, knowledge of, and appreciation for your surroundings in many ways. Spending time outdoors, especially around where you live gives you more of a sense of belonging as you connect and learn more about where you live aside from the usual routes you take. You come to find things that you didn't know were there and you can see all the good and bad happening around where you live. Seeing all of that firsthand can really bring into perspective how the environment in which you live is treated.

Outdoor activities have the mental benefits such as the overall stress reduction. Thinking capacity also tends to improve through improvement of attention that enhances connectivity in the brain and allows people to have good focus. Consequently, Consistent exposure to nature decreases stress and anxiety, helps elevate mood, and helps with emotion.

What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

On my daily walks I have noticed the way that nature reacts to the ambient environment as well as how people react to the changes in the environment. Mostly I have enjoyed the mood that I am in after I finish the walk. More places to rest away from the street would definitely make the walks more enjoyable.
