On the last day of the EcoChallenge, I have realized that I can be way more sustainable in my life. I have realized that I am very privileged in so many ways, such as living in a walkable city, being able to afford fruits and vegetables, and even getting to have food in my plate. However, I don't take advantage of the walking distance between my house and the grocery store (or my ability to walk far distances), I don't eat many fruits and vegetables, and I put too much on my plate and throw it away. With this challenge, I have become more aware of my actions and how I have been harming the planet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn about Local Indigenous Practices
What did you learn about indigenous peoples' land management that you can apply in your own life?

I researched about the Indigenous Climate Action organization. It is an organization that focuses on uplifting Indigenous people's voices, practices, and concerns about the environment. What I noticed about this organization is that they have a strong team and stick together, which is what I can apply to my own life when becoming more active in fighting for climate justice.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I noticed how much food I have wasted, as well as food that my family and I waste together. It is unfortunate that we let leftovers go to trash instead of either making it into another meal (before it went bad) or composting it. I would rather use the money for wasted food on tuition, bills, etc. instead of it going to the trash.

I agree seeing it in real view can be super unfortunate but that means we have things to make improvements on and I hope you found this action helpful to seeing where and how you can utilize the idea of the money wasted is helpful in my opinion :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

After incorporating more fruits and vegetables in my meal, I'm starting to fill my plate up with more vegetables than carbs or protein. They fill me up just as much as fries or mashed potatoes would. Eating more fruits/vegetables is now becoming a habit.

I spend most of my time walking around school. Either walking from class to class, class to library, or library to the parking lot. Today, I walked around my neighborhood and appreciated our trees, sidewalks, and paved road.

Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?

After reducing my consumption of animal products, I’m actually starting to feel less bloated lol. I’m sure it is because of what is in processed meat

This week was a bit of a challenge for me. I have been really busy with work and school, it was easy for me to turn to “easy” filling recipes that had meat. But I was able to find alternate meal plans that still filled me up for the day! It was also challenging to find time to walk around, but I managed to at least go on a 5 minute walk around my neighborhood to practice mindfulness.

Thank you, Ariana. This week also made me realize a lot of easy and quick meals are not as healthy and usually contain meat. Which made me think about low income and vulnerable groups that usually rely on these types of meals and do not have the choice to be sufficient :(

So far, its challenge is still going well. I’m still eating lots of fruits and vegetables, less meat, however I’m still doing the same with the food waste. My goal with each week is to reduce my food waste, but it’s hard. Especially when trying to portion out my meals. I seem to almost always have leftovers that I forget to eat, then throw away.

First week of challenge went well, starting to implement for vegetarian options in my diet. I have other goals as well, but this is the one that made the most changes in my daily life right now. It’s going good!
