Electricity
Choose LED Bulbs
LED Lighting
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Transportation
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Ivan Cruz 10/13/2020 7:14 AMWell, so far I have been practicing reducing food waste. I recycle because laws in NYC with recycling. I could probably reuse more, I think I am wasteful in that way and can find things to reuse instead of getting new every time. Finally, I know I could refuse what I don't need, that is a bad habit of mine and I big reason of my money spending that I should stop. So I think I am going to try to refuse the things I don't need, and reuse things more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Ivan Cruz 10/13/2020 7:10 AMThis money could be used in many different ways. I could invest it to make some returns on the money instead, making it so I am not being wasteful with the money. It can also be donated to different organizations that help with people that don't get food the way we do. I would probably do the second option, because $1,500 could get those people in need a lot of supplies they need. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Ivan Cruz 10/09/2020 12:32 PMAs long as you are getting the correct amount of nutrients then I think it would be good for you to have smaller portions as well so you aren't over eating and being unhealthy with how you eat. For example, salad is good, but too much salad is still unhealthy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Ivan Cruz 10/09/2020 12:30 PMWhen going on walks I definitely enjoyed the weather. I noticed that many people do similar things like ride bikes or walk around the park. I don't think any infrastructure changes could be made on the path I walk along because they just made a brand new path along the edge of the park next to the water so you get the breeze from the ocean, and you get to see the view of the skyline of NYC. So, I think it is a pretty enjoyable path, many people use it and its big enough that no one is crowded together. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Ivan Cruz 10/09/2020 12:30 PMI think the next step is to try to get more lights in my house switched out to LED light bulbs instead. I've researched LED light bulbs and the benefits and honestly I just prefer them over the regular light bulbs that were in the house. They save a lot more energy and even smaller things like heating up. The heat that comes from the LED lights are almost non-existent. I don't have the capabilities to do it right now, but eventually I do want an electric vehicle. I think they are just better overall and you would save so much from gas. Especially if you install solar panels on your house and then charge the car that way.
