So far so good, having fun in my mini garden and making extra cash recycling bottles and cans.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

Benefits that we may gain from smaller portion sizes, smaller waist sizes as well as reduction in overeating. With eating smaller portions we should also be making sure our serving size (what we should be eating) is correct.
Regulating blood sugar can be assisted with smaller portions, as well as increasing satiety and this will control weight gain. Eating smaller portions often is healthier than eating large meals once or twice a day.
Lastly smaller portions and serving sizes help save money on groceries. As you are eating smaller sizes you need to go grocery shopping less often.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

This week I spent a few dollars more which will pay for itself in the long run. I purchased glass and ceramic lunch containers instead of the single use and chemical based plastic lunch containers I usually use. This action is better for the environment, as I learned using the plastic containers is harmful especially as they breakdown and leak carcinogens.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?

This week 3 of our staff meetings were conducting virtually. This action had a positive outcome on the environment and budget wise for my department. Staff was able to log on from home instead of traveling to the office which cut down on harmful emissions as well as a zero expense balance on mileage reimbursement.

I have left a recycling bin in the breakroom with my goals. My co-workers have begun to toss their empty soda and bottle containers in my bin. So far I have recycled 123 water bottles and soda cans and raised $61.50 for our sunshine club. We purchase birthday treats and get well cards with our funds raised through recycling.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

During my life I have rode buses, trains, car pooled, biked and drove. At this stage I enjoy riding the train to work- its less stressful than sitting in traffic. Driving to work takes 40 min one way the train is 15 minutes one way. This action saves on gas, less pollution and my mental health as I get to enjoy reading the newspaper or catching up on streaming shows.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
What are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?

Reuse- I will commit to using my coffee thermos instead of using disposable cups at work
Recycle-When I do purchase a soft drink I will clean out the can/bottle and take it home with me to recycle at the supermarket for the .05 deposit return
Repurpose- My children have large plastic snack containers- we will use the empty containers to hold change and Lego pieces
Refuse- Grocery shopping I refuse bags at checkout and carry my own reusable cloth bags
Reduce- When ordering items online I choose to have them shipped together which may take 2 days longer, but it creates less packaging and delivery trucks stopping
