REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Amber Davis 4/29/2021 8:27 AMWhere peatlands are used as pastures, raising the water table, regulating the number of grazing livestock, fencing pastures for rotational grazing and replanting or reseeding of forage species all help to control soil erosion and reduce off-site water pollution. Wecan volunteer at local organizations whose mission aligns with the cause and make financial donations. Also, see if there are programs available in the area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Local Perennial BiomassClimate scientist Katharine Hayhoe states that "The reason we care about climate change is because it affects the people and places that we care about." What is happening (or will happen) in your area that will affect the people and places you care about?
Amber Davis 4/29/2021 8:09 AMA few things that could possibly affect areas and loved ones are: flooding, extreme hot and cold temps, shortage in food supply and health realted issues due to the change in climate. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Amber Davis 4/29/2021 7:51 AMBeing educated makes us be more cognizant of our actions. We think about how our actions will impact the enviornment or our health, positively or negatively, before proceeding. The overwhelming part is not everyone will get on board. It can be frustrating when trying to make a change and some people just won't do right. I feel that taking the initiative will show the community and officials that we are serious. This could potentially lead to laws and/or bill being passed to help promote a healthy environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Explore Other Buildings SolutionsWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Amber Davis 4/28/2021 9:49 AMOf all things created, buildings are the largest. They are the major driver of emissions and use more than half of all electricity. Drawdown have researched potential solutions that could transition buildings from being a major problem. The most interesting fact I learned is that dynamic glass can reduce a building’s energy load for heating, cooling, and lighting. More effective windows lower emissions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Amber Davis 4/28/2021 9:31 AMI think most of the foods we eat directly or indirectly affects deforestation. Soy and palm oil are the main culprits when it comes to deforestation. To help, we can speak up, get educated, spread the word, eat sustainably and participate in local movements financially or through volunteer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Amber Davis 4/22/2021 8:39 AMNo, I was not familiar with silvopasture. I think the biggest advantage is increased famland utilization. With silvopasture, the soil is protected from water and wind erosion, and the soil is enhanced with organic matter. Other benefits include: livestock, ROI and wildlife. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Amber Davis 4/22/2021 8:34 AMFamily planning is a service available to help and guide on when and if you are ready for children. The service provides birth control, pregnancy options and education. Family planning helps alleviate the social, financial or health issues that may result from an unplanned pregnancy. When comparing the needs, I think the overall problem is the same. However, certain areas may lack resources and aid to properly support and/or educate those trying to conceive or those experiencing unplanned pregnancies. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller PortionsWhile dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?
Amber Davis 4/22/2021 8:25 AMIf we eat/serve smaller portions, we decrease the chances of forcing food down that we do not want. It can be a cost saver becuase you are no longer wasting. Instead of cooking a pack of chicken, you only use half and the other half can be used later. Eating smaller portions allows you to pay attention to your body and signs of fullness. The body has time to process the food being consumed. These habits will eventually result in weight loss. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Support Nutrient ManagementHow does environmental quality influence your sense of community?
Amber Davis 4/20/2021 10:29 AMI think environmental quality affects one's health and well-being. Environmental quality can affect the availability and quality of resources, the safety of food and water supply as well as the social and psychological well-being of the community itself.
