For this particular challenge, I pledged to purchase as much of my produce as possible from local farms. The best place to find this around me, aside from the farmers market, is Whole Foods. My location has a couple sections dedicated to local produce (which I have been shopping from), but I buy the most from a brand called Gotham Greens. They are an urban farming company based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn that grows their vegetables in huge hydroponic greenhouses on the roofs of large buildings. I live just walking distance from their flagship greenhouse and it is unmistakably apparent in their products freshness and taste. Because it doesn't travel very far, it lasts at least three times longer than conventional produce, which then results in less food waste. It also feels great to support a brand that is not just dedicated to sustainable farming methods, but also to job creation and urban renewal. Their contributions to the community show the ripple effect and overarching impact that just one sustainable initiative can have. It's hard to pick the advantage that inspired me the most because the entire ecosystem they have created is inspirational as a whole.
