Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn about Local Indigenous Practices
Indigenous Peoples' Forest Tenure
I will spend at least 180 minutes learning how local indigenous tribes are caring for the land by participating in a training, workshop, or presentation.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous Peoples' Forest Tenure
I will donate to Native American Rights Fund, which protects tribal natural resources and environmental rights and promotes Native American Human Rights.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
Reduced Food Waste
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 5 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land UseDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Claudia Deheza 10/10/2020 2:20 PMFor this particular challenge, I pledged to purchase as much of my produce as possible from local farms. The best place to find this around me, aside from the farmers market, is Whole Foods. My location has a couple sections dedicated to local produce (which I have been shopping from), but I buy the most from a brand called Gotham Greens. They are an urban farming company based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn that grows their vegetables in huge hydroponic greenhouses on the roofs of large buildings. I live just walking distance from their flagship greenhouse and it is unmistakably apparent in their products freshness and taste. Because it doesn't travel very far, it lasts at least three times longer than conventional produce, which then results in less food waste. It also feels great to support a brand that is not just dedicated to sustainable farming methods, but also to job creation and urban renewal. Their contributions to the community show the ripple effect and overarching impact that just one sustainable initiative can have. It's hard to pick the advantage that inspired me the most because the entire ecosystem they have created is inspirational as a whole.
