  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Matthew Dempsey's avatar
    Matthew Dempsey 12/08/2020 8:31 AM
No, I had not heard of silvopasture before now. And after learning about it I think that the biggest advantage of it is that it improves the healthiness of the livestock and land.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Matthew Dempsey's avatar
    Matthew Dempsey 12/04/2020 8:44 AM
My vision of a sustainable community is a community that likes to focus on sustaining the environment and things like that to make the place better. To change that vision to reality everyone needs to work on whatever helps the environment in a way.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Matthew Dempsey's avatar
    Matthew Dempsey 12/03/2020 9:32 AM
I learned that some teenagers across the world are forced into having a child at such a young age. And I also learned that Colorado is doing a good job in declining the number of pregnant teens and abortions from the article I reviewed.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Matthew Dempsey's avatar
    Matthew Dempsey 12/02/2020 8:57 AM
I think this taught me how important forests are and how they help the environment. The overwhelming thing is that things are getting worse and we need to work harder on helping that not be true. We want to help things get better. That forest helps and there are so many of them. But the deforestation needs to slow down big time to keep helping.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Matthew Dempsey's avatar
    Matthew Dempsey 12/01/2020 8:56 AM
You can try and protect them in any way you can. like reducing food loss and waste will help restore the forests. Just stuff like that, that will help them in any way.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Matthew Dempsey's avatar
    Matthew Dempsey 11/30/2020 9:40 AM
Three of the barriers that we have in our community/country for women's equal rights are:
    1. Gender-based violence
    2. access to any type of resource that women are unable to acquire but men are
    3. laws that make it harder for women to work
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Matthew Dempsey's avatar
    Matthew Dempsey 11/28/2020 6:49 PM
My diet is pretty impacting based on what I just learned. I can decrease the amount of usage I have with these items (or any item that impacts deforestation) to help decrease the amount of forestation. I can increase positive impact by using less paper, recycling paper and cardboard, and more.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Matthew Dempsey's avatar
    Matthew Dempsey 11/23/2020 9:20 AM
Knowing the difference between the use, sell, and best by dates will help me make better decisions by knowing when to get something and not let it go to waste.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    Matthew Dempsey's avatar
    Matthew Dempsey 11/19/2020 7:46 AM
You can spend more money on having a geothermal energy pump at your home. They transfer heat to or from the ground to get or sool your home. Also, they can supply hot water.
