Carissa's actions
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Electricity
Off peak energy consumption
I will avoid using energy during peak hours from 4-9pm to reduce the strain on the power grid and save money.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 1 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Smaller Portions
Reduced Food Waste
I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.
Action Track: Building Resilience
Forest-Friendly Foods 2
Tropical Forest Restoration
I will replace or remove the palm oil, coffee, and cocoa products in my current diet that are known to contribute to deforestation.
Electricity
Off peak energy consumption
I will avoid using energy during peak hours from 4-9pm to reduce the strain on the power grid and save money.
Electricity
Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
Methane Digesters
I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).
Industry
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Tend A Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Action Track: Healing & Renewal
Go for a Daily Walk
Walkable Cities
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Keep Track of Wasted Food
Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Farm Irrigation Efficiency
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of trees and plants in my yard.
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
Composting
Composting, Reduced Food Waste
I will start a compost bin where I live.
Coastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks
Smart Seafood Choices
Ocean Farming
I will visit seafoodwatch.org or download the app and commit to making better seafood choices for a healthier ocean.
Industry
Advocate For More Packaging Options
Multiple Industry Solutions
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Carissa Denehy 11/09/2022 11:25 PMI work in the hospitality industry and at the front desk whenever a guest asks for extra items (like toiletries, coffee/tea, etc) in person we provide them in a small plastic bag for ease of transportation. I asked my general manager if the hotel would consider a budget allocation for paper bags or reusable baskets to provide to guests to transport any items like a plastic caddy. He didn't seem very interested by I presented my points and connected it to the professional appearance of the hotel to be handing out flimsy plastic trash bags vs something more "put together" and professional looking. -
Carissa Denehy 11/09/2022 11:19 PMIt was a big project and it took teamwork between my roommates and our landlord but we were able to re-mulch our front yard! With the cost split between several people it was more manageable and the work itself was minimal. Some racks did most of the work for us. My only objection is the red mulch used because of the dye process (iron oxide) which is "safe" but I personally believe its unnecessary. But it was the only thing available in the quantity needed. -
Carissa Denehy 11/09/2022 11:16 PMI have started the process for developing vermicomposting in my home and have a specific process in mind, but part of my sustainability goals is to reuse or repurpose the materials that are already available as opposed to buying new. So far I am keeping my eye out in thrift stores and local online trade platforms to see if any of my needed materials become available. -
Carissa Denehy 11/09/2022 11:13 PMI really liked learning about this topic because its something that isn't widely known and what is known has somewhat disproportionatly blamed the live stock industry for causing "most" of the Methane emissions. While the industry certainly isn't helpful, it isn't the greatest contributor and depending on the practices, it can be greatly diminished when we place a greater emphasize on small scale farming practices. I have several links included in my final discussion piece. -
Carissa Denehy 11/09/2022 11:08 PMI have a large 100lb dog so thanks to him I've been taking several walks a day leading me to discover some really great gems in seaside. I live within 10 minuets of two fantastic city funded parks with active volunteer groups that tend to its maintenance. And I live 20 minuets away from the best dog park ever that makes it really fun to take him to explore and meet new friends. I appreciate the funds and planning it took to make these places happen.
My only complaint is that most of seaside is limited in sidewalk space leaving a lot of pedestrians vulnerable in the street. Which is not safe especially for those with limited mobility. -
Carissa Denehy 11/09/2022 11:05 PMMy roommates had a lot of coffee that they had been gifted and I have a big tea collection, all of what we currently have is not environmentally friendly due to its production or ingredient list. But instead of throwing it out, I have committed to using them up and while I do that I have turned my sights to making my own tea blends from locally sourced plants (aka Grandma's garden). I've included a photo of spearmint (I promise its spearmint despite its shady appearance lol) and lemongrass leaves that I allowed to naturally dry and at the moment am focusing on creating a spring garden plan so I can incorporate plants that produce tasty tea. Those water bottles are their btw. -
Carissa Denehy 11/09/2022 11:00 PMI started a small garden with the limited space that I have and not getting started until too late in the season. I have some lettuce, celery, boy choy and strawberry runners that I water propagated and transferred into soil with repurposed containers like cream cheese tubs. But a rookie mistake of not creating drainage holes caused root rot in all my plants and I couldn't salvage them ;( All I have now are my memories... And the knowledge to not do that again in the future lol. -
Carissa Denehy 10/20/2022 4:39 PMI am choosing to transition to a Mediterranean Diet to increase my produce intake and reduce my meat/red meat consumption. The animal product of the diet is mostly fish and some dairy so the Seafood Watch Program is a really important resource as I begin planning meals and buying food. -
Carissa Denehy 10/20/2022 4:36 PMToday I was online looking at thrift stores and calling a few to see if they had (2) 5-gallon buckets to start vermicomposting. I looked online before using gas to drive over and find out they aren't carrying any. Tomorrow is my errand day and I plan on stopping by the "Last Chance" thrift store to see if they have any left over from home projects.-

Carissa Denehy 10/20/2022 4:34 PMI've taken to using my "dessert" plates to serve myself home meals and choosing a smaller option when eating out instead of maximizing my money by buying the larger option. Teriakye Madness really surprised me with the quality of their take-out containers and I plan on using them at home and packing up my lunch to bring to campus.
