Angie's actions

Materials

Support pollinators

Take an action to support our planet's pollinators. Learn about bees and butterflies. Make your yard more attractive to pollinators by planting native plants or reducing chemicals. Sign up for the Backyard Habitats Certification program. Share what you've learned.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Materials

Create home recycling centers for recyclables not collected curbside

Many items we use in daily life are recyclable, they are just not collected curbside. I will learn what can be recycled in my area, and create a recycling system in my home to collect those things. I will talk to my neighbors and encourage them to do the same, and share delivery runs to get these items to the recycler who can receive them. I will also learn what can be recycled elsewhere, and consider mailing costs into my budget where possible.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Materials

Go Paperless

Recycled Paper

I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates

Reduced Food Waste

I will spend at least 30 minutes learning how to differentiate between sell by, use by, and best by dates.

Solar Water Consultation

Solar Hot Water

I will contact a local installer/distributor to see if a solar water heater makes sense for my house.

Materials

Install A Toilet Tank Bank

Low-Flow Fixtures

I will reduce the amount of water flushed and save up to 11 gallons (41 L) of water a day or 330 gallons (1,230 L) a month by installing a toilet tank bank.

Protect our watershed - learn and do

The Tualatin watershed is crucial to our community's well-being. Learn more about the conservation and restoration activities of the past and present that are ensuring the health of our watershed. Pick an action from the following options: 1) Switch to organic or slow-release fertilizers, 2) Replace a non-permeable surface with a permeable one, 3) Always pick up after pets (if you notice a location, park, or greenspace with a pet waste problem, find a way to improve the disposal infrastructure), 4) Plant tough/hardy plants that require little or no extra water/fertilizer, 5) Use roof water or greywater in the garden instead of having it run directly to the street or down the drain.

LEARN MORE ABOUT PLASTICS IN THE WASTE STREAM

The history of recycling programs is complex. Much of the confusion about what is and isn't recyclable started decades ago. Take some time time to learn about the evolution of plastic recycling efforts. Click 'learn more' for suggested videos and articles.

Identify some ways in which modern human societies have become unsustainable. What kind of roles do individuals have in creating and changing practices in society?

Purchasing without thought of what to do with an item when it breaks, you become tired of it, want to change style/color, etc.  Not contributing to sources of goods and food. Too many ways modern humans have become unsustainable!
By making personal changes and setting the example of a better way

Yes, we have a role.  Sadly, we will have to insist that businesses/institutions, or it won't happen.

Definitely spending the next few weeks locating more local suppliers of meat and vegetables.  I found a beef source. Now looking for chicken!

What did you learn about wave and tidal energy? How do they compare to other energy sources?

This was a very interesting field to learn about.  I was a bit mixed on the benefit of some systems that require introducing so much foreign material for their infrastructure. Still such new technology; will be interesting to see it advance.

Capturing tidal and wave energy is another round about way of capturing solar energy.  I am concerned about adding extra devices into the marine environments, too.  For many years, I have had the fantastical dream that if all human dwellings around the world had photovoltaics integrated into their roofing material, we wouldn't need solar panel farms or devices in our seas to produce energy.  I am finally seeing the technology for this coming into the market!

Heather had another thought.  You can only check off your actions from your dashboard and not from your profile page.  Both she and I went round with this set up as well.

      Hi Angie,
Is it possible you are crushing this challenge and have completed all your one-time actions? :) You can add more action with Edit My Actions. On your phone, click the tab on the left with your name and scroll a little ways down. There should be a button labeled "Edit My Actions". Let me know if you don't see this option.

    Kind of an odd question...
Today I installed the Toilet Tummy in the two toilets in my house. We used to stand and wait for the toilet to finish filling before we could do anything else--run sink, have a shower, etc. Now we start to wait, but it's filled before we remember to! I will install the third one at work.

I enrolled in the Backyard Habitat program!  I recently moved into a new house that has a blank canvas yard: pretty much just grass and fence. Will be fun to have their help designing and planting to attract/support birds and beneficial insects.

Yes, there is a wait list for the program due to quarantine.  In addition, they have not rolled out in Cornelius where I live yet.  Wash Co program is still taking off.  But, I am officially on the wait list so it's going to happen some time in the next year I hope.

Way to go!  Were you on a waiting list for a while before they accepted you?  Lori G. said she's on the wait list for Wash Co.  I don't have much of a backyard but I still want to make it a welcoming respite for critters.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Angie DeRouchie's avatar
    Angie DeRouchie 5/04/2020 8:52 AM
After watching the videos and reading related articles, sustainability in this area would be a combination of composting and methane collection, with emphasis on composting.  The benefits composted material bring to agriculture outweigh the capturing of methane as an energy source. Collection and composting for use in agriculture should be primary, with methane capture as secondary where it is not feasible/possible.
