    Materials Fix Leaky Faucets
What are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?

My husband is very quick to replace dripping faucets (or, at least, shut them off until he can)
Other ways to save water.... Keep a jug of water in the fridge (to avoid running water to get it cold), turn off the water while actually scrubbing hands or brushing teeth,
I do these things and try to be conscious of not wasting water when I am using it

I feel as though I have already made a couple of simple changes in the way I live my day.  Smaller plates, looking for the Rainforest Alliance frog when I shop (for rainforest friendly products), looking at labels for Palm Oil (which I will now avoid) -small things, but if everyone took small steps we could make a big impact.  After logging food waste daily I am reading about how to compost... and strongly considering starting a small compost bin

I'm learning a lot.  There are many ways to make changes to improve the environment that truly are not difficult to do.  Hope this challenge encourages more people to try
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Research Businesses Owned by Women, POC, or Immigrants
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?

    Nan DiGiovanni 4/06/2020 12:27 PM
I'm not sure that I can say that I have done anything to support women-owned businesses in the past? (well, I was co-owner of one for about 25 years, we employed an average of 10 women/year)
I did a search of women-owned businesses in my county... not too many, but I will support those that offer products/services that I need when possible

Turns out I "eat" more palm oil products than I realized.  I will miss some of the products , but I will work to take them out of my consumption chain.  I have downloaded the list of products containing palm oil and the list of alternative names for palm oil
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

Palm oil, especially when hidden in products, seems to be my biggest failing.  I have downloaded the list of products and the list of alternative names for Palm oil and will work to rid my diet/household of these products

Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

Photography equipment :), but first a composting bin
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Nan DiGiovanni 4/06/2020 12:20 PM
Smaller portions - smaller waist line.  Smaller portion - money saved

What are your next steps for saving energy?

After taking an assessment of my energy use... these are some of the actions I can take to better my use of energy or to reduce energy consumption/waste:
Turn down the fridge (I have two - that were set at the highest level, I have turned each one down - fridge and freezer- by one level.  I will monitor to be sure the food is properly chilled before making any other changes)  Both fridges are nearly "end of life" - I will research more energy efficient models when the time comes to replace them.
Washing machine - I pledge to use the hot water option as little as possible.  Currently I use hot water on 1-2 loads per week...
Dishwasher - I always wait for the washer to be full before using, but I currently use the drying option - I will turn that off so that the dishes air dry
Hot water heater - we have already set the temperature at 120* (lower than the 140* it was set at when we moved in)
A/C - we currently set our temp at 77* ( i will try to handle 78*).  We live in a warm climate, so only use heat briefly - generally it is set at 65* and no higher
Windows and doors - I will check the caulking and weatherstripping as I wash the windows - tis the season
Getting around - I live far (10-12 miles) from just about anything but a few neighbors, so walking or biking (except to visit a neighbor is difficult to impossible.  But, since moving to this more remote area I have worked hard to be sure that I work to run all my errands in the most efficient manner.  Generally I drive the car  2-4 days per week
Recycling - though it is not an option with waste pick up in my area, I am a faithful recycler and take the recyclables to the landfill monthly
Roof, house paint - we are about to replace our roof and paint our house - we have chosen light colors for both
