Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

Family planning is very important for people that need to be careful with how many children they're having and the timing of those children. The services they need to receive to control this can be limited. Family planning can be very important for the health of people because unintended pregnancies that don't allow their bodies to fully recover can be unhealthy. In different places where poverty is more prevalent, the more children a family has can hurt it's chances to. break the cycle of poverty.

What is the most exciting solution you explored? Why is it exciting to you?

The most exciting solution I explored was moving to electric vehicles which I actually explored as part of my research project for this class and was very exciting because I think that it is a real possibility for us in this country to move to these vehicles because the benefits are tremendous.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use More Fruits And Veggies
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?

    Trey Doty's avatar
    Trey Doty 6/06/2023 1:03 PM
Eating more fruits and vegetables affects my health greatly because it gives me nutrients and vitamins that will help to keep me healthy. Other people benefit because there is less meat that is eaten. Our planet benefits because there is less greenhouse gas emissions because I'm changing the food that I'm eating from foods that use those emissions.

Hi Trey! I have also been eating more fruits and vegetables lately and the biggest change I noticed was how much more energy I had throughout the day. Before, when I wanted to eat a snack I would eat chips or something that wasn't healthy and I often felt lazy afterward. I also think eating more fruits and vegetables has just been better for my body since I eat late at night pretty often so a lighter meal made me feel better as opposed to having a heavier meal with meat.

I have noticed that my skin has been clearer as I have shifted to a more plant based diet and I feel like my hormones are more regulated than when I was consuming more meat. I know this is good for the environment as well because meat, especially cattle based products, generate a lot of methane and nitrous oxide that pollute the air and exacerbates our climate crisis

    Transportation Use Public Transit
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

Throughout my life I've lived in and visited many cities in Asia where I've noticed stark differences in public transportation between cities. For example in Thailand where there's a BTS Skytrain I found it very convenient and a great example of public transportation versus in Vietnam there isn't a good system yet. My attitude about transportation has changed because I've understood examples of both good and bad versions.

Transportation Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Trey Doty's avatar
    Trey Doty 6/06/2023 12:49 PM
I've noticed on my daily walks how nice it is to get fresh air and enjoy the sunlight. I've also enjoyed seeing friends that are also walking places and stopping to talk to them in a setting I normally wouldn't see them in. I've enjoyed being able to reflect on my days on these walks, I also often call my parents when I do these walks. The infrastructure that could make these walks more enjoyable would be having sidewalks on each side of the street everywhere.

    Transportation Try Carpooling
List some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

    Trey Doty 6/06/2023 12:44 PM
Some of the places I frequent often are the gym, class, friend's houses/apartments, and the grocery store. One or two days a week I can carpool to these places and I have been all quarter especially because I haven't had my for part of the quarter. Also during the summer I'll carpool a lot with my brother instead of us each driving somewhere we'll just schedule times to go together.

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?

    Trey Doty's avatar
    Trey Doty 6/06/2023 12:39 PM
Mindful eating I've noticed to be very different because it allows me to experience the food with a new enjoyment and appreciation. I also have noticed that I don't scarf down my food like I usually would. I eat slower and allow my food to digest which is healthier for my body. I also noticed that as I was eating I realized the ingredients I was eating and how healthy they actually were. During my day I normally don't have time to reflect on anything I've done, but when I eat without distractions I am able to reflect on my day which has been good for my mental health.
