Calculate the carbon footprint of my household
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how different lifestyle choices could reduce our carbon footprint and our impact on the environment.
Industry
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.

Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

Cameron Eyles 11/03/2022 11:55 AMSo this week thanks to the recent rain, I learned that both of my shoes have little holes in the soles. I have been pressured a bit to get a new pair but I have instead chosen to just fix them myself and refuse getting a new pair since my shoes are still fine aside from the little holes. I originally decided to do this just to save money but it worked out well with my challenge of doing the 5 R's. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricityAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Cameron Eyles 10/27/2022 2:37 PMSo for my household we have a carbon footprint of 3.85 which is a bit below the average of 4 given by the website I used. It was interesting how big of a difference flying made, my roommates and I don't take any flights so when I removed that from the calculator our footprint dropped by quite a bit. It was also interesting to see the different diets and how that can drop our total carbon output if the three of us just at a certain diet over a different one. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?
Cameron Eyles 10/23/2022 9:36 PMFor repurpose, one of my roommates gets paper bags from target when ever he goes shopping since he does not have reusable bags so we und with a bunch of bags to be tossed. Lately though we have started using those as little trash bags for compost and trash so we are getting a bit more use out of them than the one trip home from store that they would otherwise get. Using the R's is actually pretty nice, I got into the habit of using empty bagel bags for when I get produce from the store and it is pretty convenient just to have them to reuse over and over again. When thinking of the other Rs it can be a bit difficult to come up with ideas for them but I feel good at least trying. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustryWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Cameron Eyles 10/15/2022 9:21 PMSo to start this challenge I held onto the plastic bag that my bagels come in so that I can keep reusing it whenever I go to the store and buy produce rather than using one of those little plastic bags from the dispensers in the produce section. In the future I think that I may start using some of the paper bags that my roommates toss as a little mini compost since my neighborhood recently added compost bins so that could be a good way to reuse some of my roommates stuff while also composting.
