Yes it does, I now understand that to judge if I should thrown away the food ( I should do the smell-test )

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

The money could be invested into a stock market protfolio

That money could be put towards something like an electric vehicle, which would be a lot more ecological than a gasoline powered one. Alternatively, as this money presumably belongs to the food budget of any given family, it would be wiser to buy organic or local food. If no food is wasted, the total cost of food for the family would remain the same, but no money would be wasted and carbon emissions would be lowered.
