Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    Sophie Feinblatt's avatar
    Sophie Feinblatt 5/27/2020 7:53 AM
Micro turbines could be installed in some of the many hotels around here as well as nursing homes, commercial buildings, food processing plants and small manufacturing operations.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Sophie Feinblatt's avatar
    Sophie Feinblatt 5/27/2020 7:48 AM
My vision of a sustainable community would look like some effort put in by people to reduce their own footprints by sharing a drive to the store or changing what the main source is for electricity generation. In order for it to become a reality people would need to learn and understand how their actions affect the world and community around them and ways that they can make that possible. It all comes down to the mindset that we have.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Sophie Feinblatt's avatar
    Sophie Feinblatt 5/22/2020 6:08 AM
Family planning is essential in reducing poverty, building gender equality ad empowering women. Those in developing countries needs my be greater because they haven't had the support or access to information or services for a longer period of time than another simply because the government hasn't addressed or made an effort to help out.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Sophie Feinblatt's avatar
    Sophie Feinblatt 5/21/2020 8:09 AM
I could incorporate others R's such as reduce, reuse, refuse, re purpose and repair into my lifestyle when going to the store to buy groceries and getting rid of empty containers. Instead of buying one use plastics at the store, saying no to these plastics will help me to reduce my output. Additionally, buying reusable packaging or packaging that could be re purposed to hold or contain something else helps to reduce my output. Implementing these R's don't make me feel very challenged because, my family and I don't buy many single use plastics and if we do, we either re purpose them or recycle them.

I think a sustainable community is one that meets the needs of its residents without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Such a community would prioritize environmental, social, and economic sustainability, balancing ecological health, social well-being, and economic prosperity. territorial io
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Sophie Feinblatt's avatar
    Sophie Feinblatt 5/20/2020 9:01 AM
Reducing the number of products in my life that drain peatlands, causing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions to rise. Additionally, becoming aware of which products drain peatlands I can look up ways and other substitute products that are environmentally friendly.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Sophie Feinblatt's avatar
    Sophie Feinblatt 5/18/2020 7:11 AM
Other benefits that might come from eating smaller portions is better blood sugar control, jeep back cravings and hep to reduce overall calorie intake, improved digestions and earning money back when going to a restaurant and ordering off the kids menu, sharing a meal, or buying less food at the grocery store because you don't go through food so fast.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are just three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons? How could/does regenerative agriculture positively impact you and your community?

    Sophie Feinblatt's avatar
    Sophie Feinblatt 5/18/2020 7:04 AM
Regenerative agriculture helps to sequester carbon emissions, increasing crops resilience and profitability or crops. Regenerative agriculture causes healthier soil and because soil can hold more water it can increase resilience to floods and droughts, supply nutrients to plants, and purify water.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Sophie Feinblatt's avatar
    Sophie Feinblatt 5/15/2020 4:53 AM
What is most concerning to me about how we are affecting the planet is our carbon footprints and the efforts that people don’t seem to be making a change about. Our carbon footprint is a leading cause to many other problems we are facing like sea level rise, global warming and climate change. I know many people in our tiny little Asheville community that compost is definitely a helping factor even though it is very little it is better than nothing. Globally there have and are some changes that people are trying to make on the community and global carbon footprint.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Use Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Sophie Feinblatt's avatar
    Sophie Feinblatt 5/13/2020 7:11 AM
As I learn about the environmental challenges that we face, it adds an extra oomph on my want to help make a change whether it be donating or helping out a company that is helping, buying eco friendly products or doing things around my house. It is overwhelming as we learn about more but seeing the numbers on the Drawdown challenge as an individual, team, community and world is a motivator and makes me feel as though there may be hope.

How do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?

    Sophie Feinblatt's avatar
    Sophie Feinblatt 5/11/2020 9:52 AM
I tend to keep my opinions to myself about climate change but when around people who are willing to listen and understand, I tend to express my concern. Although it is concerning I try my best to minimize by waste production and use of products that would contribute.
