  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Emery Fischer-Schmidt's avatar
    Emery Fischer-Schmidt 12/08/2020 8:25 AM
I had never heard of the term silvopasture before. I think the greatest benefit of silvopasture is the ability to have a forest in a place where there are animals grazing. When I have driven through/flown over Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, etc, it’s hard to believe that all of that land was once all forest, so maybe with silvopasture, we can reclaim the land that is being used for livestock.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Emery Fischer-Schmidt's avatar
    Emery Fischer-Schmidt 12/07/2020 6:46 AM
I learned that CFCs destroy good ozone and they come from white goods such as air conditioners and refrigerators.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Emery Fischer-Schmidt's avatar
    Emery Fischer-Schmidt 12/04/2020 7:11 AM
Farmers would need to grow many different kinds of crops, they would use farm waste as fertilizer and biogas, and water would need to come from a reliable source or the ocean via desalination.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Emery Fischer-Schmidt's avatar
    Emery Fischer-Schmidt 12/03/2020 6:22 AM
The needs for family planning are great everywhere, but more so in developing nations. Because those nations don't have as good of access to contraceptives, hospitals or health services, or education.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Emery Fischer-Schmidt's avatar
    Emery Fischer-Schmidt 12/02/2020 6:36 AM
While it may seem overwhelming to a lot of people, like many big issues, I just remember that even if I can help in some minuscule way, I really can't change it all by myself. I can just do what I can and hope that others and others higher up in positions of power will do the same.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Emery Fischer-Schmidt's avatar
    Emery Fischer-Schmidt 12/01/2020 6:21 AM
Some of the choices that you can make are buying or not buying different products, voting for or against different politicians, and spreading the word to other people.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Emery Fischer-Schmidt's avatar
    Emery Fischer-Schmidt 11/30/2020 6:42 AM
One of the main barriers is the constant threat of sexual assault/harassment or domestic violence. This can really ruin someone's life, whether it be their physical health or mental health.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Learn about the impact of old refrigerants
Why are old refrigerant gases so harmful to our environment?

    Emery Fischer-Schmidt's avatar
    Emery Fischer-Schmidt 11/30/2020 6:39 AM
The gases are hundreds of times more harmful than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas, and they are also very very toxic.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Emery Fischer-Schmidt's avatar
    Emery Fischer-Schmidt 11/24/2020 6:29 AM
My diet isn’t impacting deforestation nearly as much as most people’s, but it still is impacting it. I am a vegetarian, so that helps quite a lot, and our family drinks grass-fed milk, eats organic food, etc, but lots of the products I eat still contribute to deforestation. One thing that would probably help a lot is to buy more food locally.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Emery Fischer-Schmidt's avatar
    Emery Fischer-Schmidt 11/23/2020 6:51 AM
Knowing what these dates mean can help me decide if I'm going to eat something because now I know that even if the date on the product is passed, it doesn't mean the product has actually expired. I will now look at the actual product and make my decision based on that, unless it has been sitting in my fridge for 2 years and then I will most definitely get rid of it.
