Billie's actions
Action Track: Social Justice
Contact your Elected Officials
Abandoned Farmland Restoration
I will contact 3 elected officials to voice my opinion on the importance of restoring farmland in my region, including both public and private land.
Transport
Use Public Transit
Public Transit
I will use public transit 10 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Materials
Share Bioplastic Disposal Tips
Bioplastics
I will spend at least 20 minutes researching how to properly dispose of bioplastics in my city and share this information with 15 friends, family and/or colleagues.
Materials
Recycle Everything I Can
Recycling
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.
Materials
Practice the 5 R's
Recycling
I will Practice the "5 Rs" — refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, and recycle — to reduce my waste more than I can with just recycling alone.
Food
Support Local Food Systems
Plant-Rich Diets
I will source 85 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
Plant-Rich Diets
I will enjoy 2 meatless or vegan meal(s) each day of the challenge.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Billie Galbraith Haynes 1/21/2020 6:16 AMRead a great article about food wastes. I’m doing most of these already. I love a grocery plan! One of the things I really need to work on is freezing. My food scraps to use later. Today I will start!

Billie Galbraith Haynes 1/18/2020 6:48 AMI went down a rabbit hole looking at landfill trash. This article is old but very interesting. I also found it really strange that all the articles on the subject were over 20 years old???

Erin M 1/18/2020 2:10 PMSuper fascinating article! Love the descriptive writing - I mean, ewwwwww! "A hunk of fetid ham fat from 1984 that remains as disturbingly plump and supple as the day it was trimmed from somebdy's dinner." I didn't quite glean why the trash is mummified - was it because it was at the top and not buried alone where it would heat up?

REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Practice the 5 R'sWhat are some more "R's" you could add to your daily practice to reduce your waste?
Billie Galbraith Haynes 1/15/2020 8:39 PMToday I fished recyclables out of the home and work trash and saved some plastic bags for a new plastic. Bag recycling program I found. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Billie Galbraith Haynes 1/15/2020 8:36 PMWe made a beautiful vegetarian dinner tonight! Veggie fried rice with mostly local veg and hoisin tofu. The whole family raved. We do eat many veggie meals a week and they are always enjoyed. We would usually add chicken or sausage to this dinner.-
Erin M 1/16/2020 6:20 PMThat looks AMAZING!!!

Billie Galbraith Haynes 1/03/2020 7:41 PMToday I bought reusable bamboo paper towels. We don’t currently use a lot of paper towels but these are great! Lola and I rode the bus to her friends for a board game day. We carpooled with my mom and reduced trips in the car around town. We will continue to work on driving less.-
Sarah Larsen 1/07/2020 5:52 PMI've ordered from Grove before and there are a lot of cool products on the website. -
Billie Galbraith Haynes 1/05/2020 3:16 PMErin I couldn’t reply to your post so I’m replying to my own 🤣
I ordered them from the Grove which is a company I order my cleaning supplies. As far as I can tell they do a great job of offering environmentally friendly household items all in one place. I should do a little more research on Some items. -
Erin M 1/04/2020 6:06 PMOh my gosh Billie Rose, that's AWESOME! Dang, super super cool. Where did you get your bamboo paper towels? I just ordered bamboo TP online, but it'd be great to get it locally. LOVE that you rode the bus and carpooled! That's fantastic!!!
