Exploring different parts of coastline provides an understanding of local nature and artistic heritage.

On a weekend away in Suffolk, east England, we discovered many wonderful fishing practices but that other wildlife is being impacted by power lines. For example deer and turtle doves.

While the giant scallop, crafted locally, provides a place to rest and contemplate.

Action Track: Building Resilience Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

I’ll answer this with a quote by Robin Wall Kimmerer, “The pecan trees and their kin show a capacity for concerted action, for unity of purpose that transcends the individual trees. They ensure somehow that all stand together and thus survive.”

On our recent vacation in Cornwall we came across this restored tin mine. It is set in a community which is very environmentally active. We stayed in a tree house built by one of the founders of the charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) https://www.sas.org.uk/

I was given this book as a gift. It is about gratitude, science and how to achieve reciprocity with the earth.

A weave of ecology, environmental biology and stories that appeal to each sense.

A helpful complement to all the resources provided by Drawdown Ecochallenge. To understand how indigenous practices around the world are critical to learning about, and addressing, climate change and environmental sustainability.

What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

Climate change is a threat multiplier. One of our most powerful levers is curbing population growth: 1bn fewer people = 120bn tons less emissions. Charities like Educating Girls of Rural China, supported by AlixPartners’ Shanghai office, provide young girls access to education to learn about life choices.

How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

There are so many different ways to travel the 8-9 miles into central London from my home. When I was training for marathons I would run to work several times per week and enjoyed seeing the city come to life at sunrise.

For the past several years I’ve been injured but enjoyed getting through more books by listening to them while commuting by public transport. The packed-train experience was extremely unpleasant so I began to walk certain legs of the journey to arrive at work or home in a better state of mind.

I now have a bike and love the opportunity to explore routes and observe life happening across the varied pockets of the city again.

Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn about Local Indigenous Practices
What did you learn about indigenous peoples' land management that you can apply in your own life?

    Cindy Godwin's avatar
    Cindy Godwin 6/17/2020 11:06 PM
I learned that indigenous people are the original environmentalists and that they safeguard 80% of the world’s biodiversity. A simple way to apply their principles of food security is to buy local produce.

Not related to land management but I learned about Two Spirit identities in tribal communities in North America. There are society groups in Canada and also across the US, ranging from NY to Dallas to California. Companies can be aware and inclusive of this population as part of LGBTQ education and allyship.

Each of us can impact the environment in multiple ways. It is important to understand the impact of intersectional systemic issues. A good example of this is outlined in this article on racism, published on World Environment Day: https://www.yesmagazine.org/environment/2020/06/05/racism-environmental-movement/

Women and Girls Support Women-Owned Businesses
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. What have you done in the past to support women-owned businesses? How can you better support communities by supporting women?

Over two decades of grassroots travel, we have sought out opportunities to support local entrepreneurs, and women cooperatives, as well as what we do at home in the UK.

Through my Ecochallenge research, I’ve also discovered Starfishproject.com which helps exploited women and girls to establish independence and develop careers.
