Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Finn Goldberg's avatar
    Finn Goldberg 12/10/2020 5:41 PM
I had never “herd” the term before now. I think the biggest advantage of silvopasture is the stability it will provide for farms. The climate is very bad already, who knows how necessary the trees will be for farms in the future.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Finn Goldberg 12/08/2020 8:11 PM
I have changed my thinking a lot recently, and I used to believe I needed to protest and campaign for policy change. Nowadays I have realized the real difference I can make is just by making a few small sacrifices and doing my best.

I feel very overwhelmed about the American wasteful attitude.

I have felt more comfortable about how popular green industries have become and how fertility rate is going down.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Finn Goldberg's avatar
    Finn Goldberg 12/08/2020 12:20 PM
The best way I can protect bogs (and the environment in general) that are far away from me, is to vote with my dollar. I can choose to avoid products with palm oil, and meat.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

    Finn Goldberg's avatar
    Finn Goldberg 12/07/2020 9:36 PM
Spending more time outdoors has made me appreciate how much we still have to preserve, and that America is still a place of natural beauty, and we shouldn't give up on it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Finn Goldberg's avatar
    Finn Goldberg 12/07/2020 9:29 PM
The human over-pumping of water is causing subsidence and poisoning water. Farm runoff is causing poisoning, and dangerous algae growth. Mining is causing poisoning and erosion that blocks rivers.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Finn Goldberg's avatar
    Finn Goldberg 12/07/2020 9:22 PM
My vision of a sustainable community i one that has 0 waste, and lives of of the land. They invest in this land and let it rejuvenate to ensure no damage is done.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Finn Goldberg's avatar
    Finn Goldberg 12/07/2020 8:55 PM
I learned that family planning has been seriously effective in the U.S, and my outlook on it became more optimistic for our country. But I think before we can start worrying about contraceptives and family planning services in many countries, we have to make sure that culture is radically changed, and young girls are no longer married off or sold into sex trafficing.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

    Finn Goldberg's avatar
    Finn Goldberg 12/07/2020 8:27 PM
Thankfully, I live in a very progressive area, and cultural sexism is not as severe as other places in the country. But behind the scenes, women are still a lot less money than men, and have a harder time finding jobs. The medical community is large in Asheville, and often men (With the same education) advance to higher positions and graduate training earlier.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Healing & Renewal Plant Trees
How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Finn Goldberg's avatar
    Finn Goldberg 11/30/2020 5:17 PM
Planting a tree will make us all a little healthier because of the carbon intake, and i will be a little healthier after getting out and using my muscles to dig.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Finn Goldberg's avatar
    Finn Goldberg 11/30/2020 5:13 PM
The best I can do is continue to be vegetarian, and to snack less (which will help lead to veganism).
