Jonathan's actions

Food, Agriculture, and Land Use

Keep Track of Wasted Food

Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during Drawdown Ecochallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Electricity

Encourage my company and/or organization to measure and manage their carbon footprint

Organizations have a responsibility to make sustainable business decisions. To understand how to improve sustainable practices, it’s important to start with understanding the current impact. I will share the Tradewater Business Carbon Calculator with my organization.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Learn about Carbon Offsets

I will visit Tradewater’s website to learn more about carbon offsets, and why they are a necessary solution in combating a climate crisis.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Land Sinks

Explore My Area

Sometimes protecting nature requires feeling connected to nature. I will invest 15 minutes in exploring and appreciating a natural area in my region, whether a forest, wetland, coastal area, or somewhere else.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Industry

Recycle Everything I Can

Recycling

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

I am someone who loves to be outdoors and enjoy nature every time I can. I appreciate the beautiful places this earth offers us to go for walks, swimming, hiking, camping, etc. The more I spend time outside, the longer I want all that to last. So, spending time outdoors makes me appreciate my surroundings and makes it want to keep it clean and free of pollution so I can enjoy it as well as future generations. The best way to understand something is to have an experience and spend time with it so you can actually feel a connection. That's how I feel when I'm outdoors.

Encourage them to recycle, walk to work or use a bicycle, reduce food waste, use reusable bags.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Industry
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

I could reduce the amount of food I wasted, I could reuse bags when going grocery shopping, I could refuse to buy food items I know I won't eat, I could repurpose my money spent on food i wasted and donate it to programs that try to end world hunger. It makes me feel better about myself when I considerer doing these things.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food, Agriculture, and Land Use
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I would rather use this money to donate it to end world hunger. There are millions of people that would be benefited if every household did this, it would really make a positive impact.
