REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Nicholas Hara 4/26/2021 8:43 AMOne of the most basic ways to support the public transportation system is to USE it rather than the alternative of driving to work (or wherever). It supports it with dollars and it also provides the case for future additions to the public transportation infrastructure if the prior projects are being utilized by the population. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Learn about Carbon OffsetsWhat are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?
Nicholas Hara 4/24/2021 6:26 AMIt's always interesting to learn more about items that are impacting the environment that aren't the widely known problems (from what I have seen.) For instance, I hear so much about CO2, but I had not heard a lot about CFC and HCFC. It sounds like those two are a lot more impactful (in a negative way) when released into the environment compared to CO2. Purchasing carbon offsets is definitely a very intriguing concept and something that I want to explore and budget for after this challenge!
Another example was a recent documentary that I watched called Seaspiracy (found it on Netflix). Here I learned that while there is a lot of attention paid to plastic straws and their damaging impact in the oceans. While they are obviously terrible, it was interesting to see that they made up a SMALL FRACTION of ONE PERCENT of the plastic that is in oceans. I believe the documentary stated that about 50% or more of the plastic/waste in oceans comes from FISHING BOATS, such as fishing nets.... as you might expect, while it's true that plastic straws can kill animals, lost fishing nets are also very dangerous to animals (that's basically what they are designed to do in the first place!). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Nicholas Hara 4/22/2021 9:01 PMEating meat is not an effective allocation of resources. The amount of resources that are consumed to raise a cow, for example, could feed and hydrate many more people relative to the amount of people that it will feed by its meat alone. I think most people would be surprised at just how delicious vegetarian meals can be. We had a delicious tagine dish for dinner tonight and it was so flavorful and filling and there was absolutely no meat! :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Nicholas Hara 4/15/2021 6:30 PMThe thing that I enjoy the most about my walks is being by bodies of water. I feel fortunate to live by a creek that runs to a water fall at one end and also connects to two lakes the opposite direction. It's nice to see wildlife near the water too! -
Nicholas Hara 4/05/2021 4:15 PMI'm excited to do this to build better habits. Checking boxes is definitely a helpful way to get me to change my behavior!
