REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Building With Carbon Storing Waste ProductsHow feasible do you think it is for society to build with agricultural waste products?
Olivia Hardin-Nieri 12/03/2020 8:14 PMI think that with smart people on a project anything is possible. Agricultural waste could be the next big thing. The only thing I'm afraid of is companies might be so obsessed with the idea of using the waste that they will create more waste to make it possible to use the initial waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about BiocharCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Olivia Hardin-Nieri 12/03/2020 8:07 PMYes-Biochar is extremely helpful when improving soil structure and the general health of an area. I think biochar needs to be more widely known and used because it is a super helpful solution that can help solve a lot of our problems. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
Olivia Hardin-Nieri 12/03/2020 8:03 PMI feel like I am eating more slowly and am able to focus on my family and what is going on around me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Learn about the Need for Family PlanningWhat did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?
Olivia Hardin-Nieri 12/03/2020 9:54 AMI learned about how important contraceptives are. Not only do they need to be more widely distributed but also the cost of them needs to be cut in order to cater to any women who needs/want birth control. On a full scale there needs to be more education around the importance of family planning and the impact it has on women around the world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Olivia Hardin-Nieri 12/02/2020 8:30 AMLearning has a huge impact on my actions. Every time I learn something new it sort of triggers the guilt factor (I know that's not necessarily the point) which makes me want to make a change. The most overwhelming parts are the big picture ones. It’s easy to feel like you aren’t making a difference while going along with your day. What gives me hope are challenges like these that allow for fun change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Olivia Hardin-Nieri 12/01/2020 10:20 AMI have a love for nature and am devastated at the rate of extinction of vital species. It’s also scary when thinking in terms of health and even something so basic as a place to live. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Olivia Hardin-Nieri 12/01/2020 9:17 AMI can try to buy products that plant and harvest sustainably and do not include harmful products like palm oil or pulp. Knowing a company and what land and methods they use will be helpful for buying decisions as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Learn about the impact of old refrigerantsWhy are old refrigerant gases so harmful to our environment?
Olivia Hardin-Nieri 11/30/2020 8:31 PMOld refrigerant gases are super harmful because they break down the ozone layer which is protecting the earth from harmful sun radiation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth and Education Research Barriers to Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Olivia Hardin-Nieri 11/30/2020 10:47 AMI think that generally the barriers that are stopping women in my community are more seen at grassroots levels. This makes it harder to see the inequality when the reasons are so ingrained in everyday life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Olivia Hardin-Nieri 11/24/2020 8:58 AMMy family drinks a lot of coffee from now on while shopping. We will look for the correct seals of approval. I think that as time goes on it will be important for stores to keep the more environmentally conscious products well-stocked and easily accessible.
