Land Sinks Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    Krislynn Hawkins's avatar
    Krislynn Hawkins 12/08/2020 8:06 AM
I had never heard of silvopasture before today. After learning about it, I think it’s very beneficial to have multiple elements within one area to increase productivity.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Research the Climate Impact of Refrigerants
What did you learn about the climate impact of refrigerants? How do supermarkets contribute to this impact?

    Krislynn Hawkins's avatar
    Krislynn Hawkins 12/07/2020 5:09 PM
Refrigerants damage the ozone layer, therefore making it possible for the Earth to be warmed more easily. Supermarkets leak a large number of refrigerant emissions into the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Learn about Carbon Offsets
What are some attributes of an offset that you should consider before purchasing them?

    Krislynn Hawkins's avatar
    Krislynn Hawkins 12/05/2020 2:07 PM
Tradewater claims the attributes their offset offers are permanence, additionality, verification, ease, and responsible conduct.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Industry Learn about the impact of old refrigerants
Why are old refrigerant gases so harmful to our environment?

    Krislynn Hawkins's avatar
    Krislynn Hawkins 12/05/2020 1:55 PM
They have the potential to severely thin the ozone layer which protects us and the Earth from the Sun. They can also contribute to global warming.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Krislynn Hawkins's avatar
    Krislynn Hawkins 12/04/2020 10:28 AM
I think the most important part of a sustainable community includes the use of cleaner power and production practices. This would require changes within the daily lives of people as well as in large industries.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health and Education Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Krislynn Hawkins's avatar
    Krislynn Hawkins 12/03/2020 8:34 AM
Family planning is a big part of the solution to poverty. Currently, many women do not have proper access to make the family planning decisions they want or need to. All women need access to make these choices for themselves, but some women’s need to avoid an unwanted pregnancy may be direr due to their situation.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Sinks Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Krislynn Hawkins's avatar
    Krislynn Hawkins 12/02/2020 7:57 AM
I am definitely more aware of the impact I and everyone around me have on the environment on a daily basis. It does make me think before I engage in certain actions that I know can have an effect. Obviously, it’s impossible for only one person to reverse and compensate for all the damage that has been done, protecting the environment is a group issue. However, many organizations are working towards a better and more resourceful future which gives me hope that it is possible for us to change and help the Earth.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Smaller Portions
While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come from eating/serving smaller portions?

    Krislynn Hawkins's avatar
    Krislynn Hawkins 12/01/2020 8:57 AM
Managing what you eat can also have a direct impact on your physical health.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Krislynn Hawkins's avatar
    Krislynn Hawkins 12/01/2020 8:54 AM
I think that the resources we use up or damage during the production process of many different products is concerning. Resources are limited and our current actions are not very sustainable.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Krislynn Hawkins's avatar
    Krislynn Hawkins 12/01/2020 8:35 AM
By not buying products that use palm oil or pulp, I can help to decrease the overall demand for those things.
