REFLECTION QUESTIONCoastal, Ocean, and Engineered Sinks Learn about BiocharCan biochar provide additional benefits besides sequestering carbon?
Pierre Hirson 9/25/2021 5:03 PMBesides locking up carbon, it can also increase soil quality and reduce waste, as green waste is used to make it. -
Pierre Hirson 9/23/2021 8:01 PMThis ecochallenge led me to learn a lot about different eco-friendly projects. It's great to learn about things I haven't heard of in the past! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Learn More about BiomassHad you ever heard of biomass technology before you took this challenge? What did you learn that surprised you? Share your new knowledge with your friends!
Pierre Hirson 9/23/2021 7:57 PMI was not aware of Biomass Technology before this challenge. It is a form of energy production which is renewable, carbon-neutral and reduces waste going to landfill. It seems to be very promising as it is also cheaper than fossil energy production. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Pierre Hirson 9/22/2021 8:24 PMIn the US, Manufacturers provide dating to help consumers and retailers decide when food is of best quality. Except for infant formula, dates are not an indicator of the product’s safety and are not required by Federal law.
In Australia, there is a difference between Expiry dates and Best Used By dates. If the Best Used By date is passed, it does not mean the food is expired/unsafe to eat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Research Retrofitting IncentivesHow can you share what you have learned in your research with others?
Pierre Hirson 9/22/2021 8:18 PMI shared the research I've done with a colleague on Slack yesterday as I thought the subject I was researching (Green Gentrification) was really interesting and eye-opening. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings Learn about 'Green Gentrification'Cities and towns need to plan for climate change. How can your city or town make its climate action plans equitable and socially just?
Pierre Hirson 9/21/2021 5:18 PMI clicked on the action Green Gentrification as I had no idea what that meant. After reading about it, I am actually very happy I clicked on it and followed through learning about it. I always enjoy green parks, walks along the rivers of cities I visit, and the problems around housing following these green developments were not something I was aware of. Cities should really have fair housing plans along the green development plans to avoid pushing out the people who lived here before and can't anymore. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Building Resilience Tour a Green RoofWhat did you learn on your green roof tour?
Pierre Hirson 9/20/2021 5:28 PMGreen roofs are not only great for the planet they are also great at insulation (temperature and sound)! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing & Renewal Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How does your eating experience differ when practicing mindfulness?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Purchase a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Pierre Hirson 9/19/2021 6:18 PMWorking remotely showed us we can have plenty of good meetings virtually on platforms like Google Meet or Zoom, etc. I hope we can learn from it and decrease the number of flights we take professionally for meetings that do not require face-to-face interactions. -
Pierre Hirson 9/16/2021 5:18 PMDid you know you can enjoy cleaning and exercise at the same time? YES! I would NEVER have said this before starting Scuba Diving. Scuba Diving is super fun and it combines a fun activity with exercise. You can also take the time to pick up a couple of plastic bottles, fishing lines or other harmful materials from deep under!-
Lucinda Young 9/16/2021 10:31 PMI've cleaned waterways while kayaking and picked up plastic litter while hiking. Yes, great to combine exercise with environmental stewardship!
