Electricity

Stop over chemical reacting!!: Intro to the Carbon Cycle

Climate change is occurring because of a phenomenon that is also a very basic chemical reaction. When fossil fuels burn, carbon dioxide is produced. Usually, this reaction balances out as carbon dioxide is then used during photosynthesis. However, the amount of carbon being produced currently, due to our overuse of fossil fuels, is tipping this delicate balance. We'll talk more about the effects later on...in the meantime let's learn about how to reduce the ways WE start chemical reactions that create carbon. Use the link below to measure your carbon footprint.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Why is taking action on climate change important to you? Why do you care?

because I like living on earth.  And climate change is kinda wack. Interstellar doesn't seem that fun.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Eliza H's avatar
    Eliza H 4/22/2021 5:56 PM
There are more dogs and people out now. It looks like pre covid. There's a lot of construction where I live so I guess once they finish that up my walks will be more enjoyable.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Spread the Word about Energy Alternatives
What inspiration and wisdom can you gather from your family, faith, or community traditions that would help you in both communicating about and addressing our most pressing energy issues?

    Eliza H's avatar
    Eliza H 4/22/2021 5:55 PM
Listen as much as you speak. Implementing renewable energy can be difficult and there will be issues that can only be solved through communication.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food, Agriculture, and Land Use Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Eliza H's avatar
    Eliza H 4/22/2021 1:24 PM
I'm now more inclined to not throw away milk that's past the best by date.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Sinks Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Eliza H's avatar
    Eliza H 4/22/2021 12:30 PM
I eat 3 of the top 4 foods that impact deforestation on a daily/weekly basis. I refuse to give up eggs, meat and coffee but I'll try to eat less chocolate.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

    Eliza H's avatar
    Eliza H 4/22/2021 12:17 PM
School, I basically walk or bike every where else.

    I already carpool 2-3 times a week.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Eliza H's avatar
    Eliza H 4/22/2021 12:16 PM
A sustainable community would have little to no waste and would be able to support itself if all the other communities and cities on earth disappeared.

For this to become a reality things like solar panels and sustainable farms need to be implemented around the globe.
