Materials

Recycle Everything I Can

Recycling

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will research and recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community, making sure to not contaminate recyclables with non-recyclables.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? How do the needs of different people in different places compare to each other?

    Daley Hooten 5/22/2020 9:14 AM
I learned that lots of people need family planning some people can get it and afford it and others can't get it either because they can't afford it or they live too far out to access it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Daley Hooten's avatar
    Daley Hooten 5/22/2020 8:52 AM
I think my vision of a sustainable community would be where everyone uses renewable energy sources and no longer uses fossil fuels. I think in order to change this to make this happen we would need to provide homes and buildings with solar panels and instructions on how to save energy.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Daley Hooten's avatar
    Daley Hooten 5/20/2020 10:20 AM
We could decrease the number of peatlands being drained by not buying things that have palm oil in it so there is less of a demand for it and peatlands will no longer be destroyed.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 2
How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

    Daley Hooten's avatar
    Daley Hooten 5/19/2020 8:20 AM
It wasn't that hard to cut coffee out of my diet because I don't really drink it that much anyway, but it felt good to cut it out of my diet completely because it will help the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Spread the Word about Energy Alternatives
What inspiration and wisdom can you gather from your family, faith, or community traditions that would help you in both communicating about and addressing our most pressing energy issues?

    Daley Hooten's avatar
    Daley Hooten 5/18/2020 7:59 AM
I think the best way of communicating with people about our pressing energy issue is by giving people facts and statistics and talking to them in a calm manner because no-one is going to listen if people are yelling at them, but we still need to establish that this is a problem that needs immediate attention.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but its carbon footprint may not be obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

    Daley Hooten's avatar
    Daley Hooten 5/18/2020 7:54 AM
Making a 1 kg block of cheese generates 12 kg of CO2, and just two minutes of daily use of a mobile device produces 47 kg of CO2 per year. We can find out more about how to reduce carbon emissions from these things by researching them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

    Daley Hooten's avatar
    Daley Hooten 5/18/2020 7:48 AM
You could incorporate every part of the vegetable in a zero-waste meal by making a salad and putting that vegetable and all its parts in the salad but make sure everything is edible before.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings and Cities Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

    Daley Hooten's avatar
    Daley Hooten 5/11/2020 12:49 PM
I enjoy just getting the fresh air when walking and seeing the wildlife and pretty flowers my neighbors have. I could make my walks even more enjoyable by taking different routes and going to new places.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Daley Hooten's avatar
    Daley Hooten 5/08/2020 11:15 AM
I could incorporate the R's into my lifestyle by making sure we can reuse the things we would usually throw away and also make sure if we can't reuse it that it's not going into the trash. I think incorporating the R's into daily life is good and will help the environment.
