Reace Hummell - SPEAK 4/22/2021 3:30 PMFor my one time challenge I chose to calculate the carbon footprint of my household. I chose to calculate it based on my college dorm rather than my house in Nashville because I know that I will be living like I am now more frequently in the future. I think the challenge was successful but a bit disheartening because I thought that I was drastically decreasing my carbon footprint since being in college. There are many aspects of the carbon footprint but I think that the easiest way to reduce my carbon footprint personally is reducing my meat consumption. I have learned how unnecessary meat is for my diet and how the nutrition benefits do not outweigh the negative impacts on the environment. I can also push myself to walk more around campus and even to things that are off campus, using my car only for actual reasons instead of just being lazy. Calculating my carbon footprint has shown me that there is always necessary work to be done and that my personal work to a net zero emission lifestyle is far from over. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONIndustry Calculate the carbon footprint of my householdAfter you determined your carbon footprint, did you see what different choices you can make in order to reduce it?
Reace Hummell - SPEAK 3/27/2021 10:12 AMI definitely think that one way I can reduce my carbon footprint is to cut more and more meat out of my diet. Even though I said I did not eat meat on a regular basis, I still do consume at least 7 servings of meat per week which can easily be taken out of my diet. I can replace this with fish as it is less harmful for the environment but still provides me with necessary protein and nutrients. Especially this year, I can also push myself to walk more because everything on and around campus is walkable. While I don't really drive that much here, there are still ways to minimize my carbon footprint through choosing to walk more places. This will benefit not only the environment, but also my mental and physical health.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood, Agriculture, and Land Use Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our bodies, our planet, and other people?
Reace Hummell - SPEAK 3/27/2021 9:56 AMWe know that in many countries, eating meat is an aspect of culture or individuality. Eating, in general, can be an intimate experience. However, in come cases eating meat is a luxury that only richer countries may be able to afford. The cost of meat production and processing alone can make the commodity more expensive than, say, growing food in a garden or even buying only plant-based products.
It is a common misconception that meat is the only effective source of protein and that is why we should eat so much of it. Meat can actually have lasting negative effects on our bodies such as being directly linked to cancer and heart disease. Not to mention that the beef industry is one of the most harmful to the environment because of the immense amount of CO2 emissions, the amount of land needed, and the unethical ways that the animals are treated.
The cons outweigh the pros of heavy meat consumption that us Americans are definitely guilty of. There are other ways to receive the necessary protein without harming our bodies, the planet , and other animals. -
Reace Hummell - SPEAK 3/23/2021 7:27 AMThis is now my third week of the EcoChallenge and I really have nothing bad to say about it. I have enjoyed the experience so much because I not only feel better, but I know that I am also helping the planet. I have noticed that I usually save my meal with meat for dinner, which has worked so well for me. Usually dinner is my heartiest meal anyways, so I think this dietary adjustment has worked so well for my lifestyle. If I don't go full vegetarian after this challenge, I think I will at least continue this plan because I have so easily incorporated it into my life, even on a college campus. -
Reace Hummell - SPEAK 3/13/2021 8:48 PMToday marks almost two weeks of eating at least two meatless meals a day for me! This challenge has made me realize how unnecessary meat is as it is very easy to make up that protein in other facets of my diet. One of my fears when I first started this challenge was that I was going to noticeably feel less energized from the lack of protein, but I have been proven wrong. I would almost say that I feel more energized from the higher consumption of fruits and vegetables. I was also worried that I would quickly miss meat in my diet, but this challenge has proved that I do not need it and I'm excited to continually sustainably improve my diet. -
Reace Hummell - SPEAK 3/06/2021 8:28 PMAs of today, I am on my 7th consecutive day of eating meat-free meals. I don't think this challenge is as difficult as I first expecting because I never really thought about how I rarely eat meat more than once a day. One obstacle that I have encountered is that living on campus requires me to use the dining plan and therefore it can be challenging to fully choose what I want to put into my body. Additionally, I challenge myself to eat at Stokely as much as I can so I'm able to use the Eco-2-Go container. While I happily choose to do this in order to help the environment, it limits my options for meatless meals. I am, however, enjoying the eco-challenge and hope that this will become routine for me.
